Adilabad district is a district located in the northern region of the Indian state of Telangana. It is the gateway district to the South India.[2] Adilabad is the administrative seat of the district. The district is currently a part of the Red Corridor.[3]

History

The original name of the Adilabad was Edlabad during the rule of Qutub Shahis.[4]

The dense forests and river Godavari basin of Adilabad district[5] flourished as pre-historic settlements related to Stone Age, Mesolithic and Neolithic cultures. Explorations and excavations at the surrounding areas of Luxettipet, Asifabad, Boath, Bhainsa and Nirmal yielded pre- and proto-historic remnants.[6]

Due to the districts re-organisation in October 2016, the district was carved out to form three new districts of Asifabad district, Mancherial district and Nirmal district.[2]

Geography

Adilabad district occupies an area of 4,185.97 square kilometres (1,616.21 sq mi).[7] Adilabad is bounded on the North by Yavatmal district and on North East by Chandrapur district, both of Maharashtra state, on East by Asifabad district (aka. Komaram Bheem district), on South East by Mancherial district, on South by Nirmal district and on West by Nanded district of Maharashtra state.

Demographics

As of 2011 Census of India, the district has a population of 708,952.[7]

Religions

Badankurti[8] village in Khanapur mandal of Adilabad district was explored and remnants of a Buddhist monastery were found on a small island of Godavari river near Badankurthi. The town of Bhainsa, probably related to early Buddhist times, as a pair of carved feet near a mound[9] were found.

Languages

Different tribes in the district include, Adivasis, Gonds, Kolams, Pardhans and Thotties.[10]

Economy

In 2006, the Indian government named Adilabad as one of the 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640) in the country.[11] It is one of the districts in Telangana currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).[11]

Administrative divisions

The district has two revenue divisions of Adilabad and Utnoor. These are sub-divided into 18 mandals.[7] Buddha Prakash is the present collector of the district.[12]
