List of most discussed YouTube videos

Psy performing "Gangnam Style" in Sydney in 2013. "Gangnam Style" has been the most discussed video on YouTube since September 2016, with over 4.7 million comments as of December 2016.

This list of most discussed YouTube videos contains the top 40 videos with the most comments of all time, as derived from YouTube charts.[1] The comment count is taken directly from the page of the video itself. Of the 40 videos in this list, 30 are music videos, with 21 of them being Vevo videos.

The ability to comment on a YouTube video has been available since the site launched in April 2005. It is commonly believed that the famous "Interesting..."[2] comment, written by a user named COBALTGRUV,[3] is the first comment ever posted on YouTube. However, that is a misconception. Though it is the first comment on the first YouTube video, it is not the first-ever comment on YouTube. The earliest known YouTube comment is "LOL!!!!!!!",[4] which was written by a user named Marco Cassé[5] on June 14, 2005, on a video entitled "Good Times!!!"[6]

Commenting on YouTube has been the topic of much debate in the past. On November 6, 2013, YouTube made significant changes to the comment section, which included the launch of Google+ integrated comments.[7] The new system came with many new features (such as the ability to moderate comments, sorting mechanisms to bring more "relevant" discussions to the top, and no character limits),[8] however, users were required to connect their YouTube accounts to Google+ in order to leave a comment on a video.[9] In addition, users could no longer reply to any comments written before the update. The controversial change was met with a large backlash from the YouTube community, who complained that Google+ stripped them of anonymity and urged YouTube to stop forcing Google+ on those who didn't want it.[10] Over 241,000 users voiced their disapproval by signing a Change.org petition asking YouTube to revert to the old commenting system.[11] Even the site's co-founder, Jawed Karim, voiced his disapproval in a post on his channel: "why the fuck do i need a google+ account to comment on a video?"[12] Not only did the new system spark outrage among the community, but according to a statement made by YouTube, "it also introduced new opportunities for abuse and shortly after the launch ... some users [were seen] taking advantage of them".[13]

Following this backlash, the video that YouTube released to explain their new changes received over 62,000 dislikes (94% of its total ratings),[14] while commenters pasted text art tanks and stick figures called "Bob" in protest.[15] As a result of the new update, millions of comments that YouTube identified as spam were removed from numerous videos across YouTube, which greatly impacted many videos on this list. One notable example is Justin Bieber's "Baby" music video, which had over 9.5 million comments before the update,[16] but less than 6.7 million comments after the update.[17]

In response to pressure from the YouTube community, Google publicly apologized for forcing Google+ users to use their real names,[18] and on July 27, 2015, they dropped their Google+ requirement across all products, beginning with YouTube.[19] In September 2016, YouTube made slight modifications to the comment system which re-enabled the ability for users to reply to pre-Google+ comments. Consequently, millions more spam comments were removed from videos across the site, again affecting many videos on this list. Videos that were affected the most were livestreams, many of which saw losses of comments in excess of 99%. Some notable instances occurred on eight Jove [Virtus.Pro][20] videos and one EeOneGuy[21] video, all of which had over one million comments before the update.[22] After the update, all nine of those videos were reduced to less than 34,000 comments, with eight of them being reduced to less than 3,000.[23]
