Semlac (Hungarian: Szemlak) is a commune located in Arad County, in the western part of Romania, near the border with Hungary, is situated in the south-western part of the Arad Plateau, in the large valley of the Mureș River. Its territory occupies 8517 ha. It is composed of a single village, Semlac, situated at 37 km from Arad.

Population

According to the last census, the population of the commune counts 3787 inhabitants, out of which 80,8% are Romanians, 3,6% Hungarians, 9,6% Roma, 3,6% Germans, 1,1% Slovaks, 0,7% Ukrainians and 0,6% are of other or undeclared nationalities.

History

The first documentary record of the locality Semlac dates back to 1256.

Economy

The economy of the commune is mainly agrarian, the locality is well known in the region as an important grain-bearing vegetable-growing place. The Livestock is based on pig and cattle raising.

Tourism

Although in the view of many tourists Semlacu is a transit commune, its natural park is worth visiting for everybody coming to this zone.
