Kasturba Medical College (KMC) is a medical college based in Manipal, Udupi District Karnataka, India.

Established by Dr. T.M.A. Pai on 30 June 1953,[1] KMC Manipal is one of the most prestigious and premier medical colleges in India. It has been ranked among the top three medical colleges in India by The Hindu[2] and India Today,[3] preceded only by AIIMS, New Delhi and Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore. KMC Manipal was ranked among the top five medical colleges by the Hindustan Times.[4] and the India Today-Nielsen Survey (2014).[5] It was also ranked 4 by Careers360[6]

KMC was the first self-financing medical college in India. Today, students from 44 countries have graduated from KMC, and the medical degree (MBBS) is recognized worldwide, including by the General Medical Council, ECFMG, Australian Medical Council and Malaysian Medical Council among several others.

KMC was under the purview of the Mangalore University. In 1993, the government of India granted Deemed University status to Manipal University (formerly known as MAHE) which saw KMC coming under its wing.

History

The college started with the pre-clinical section at Manipal and the students had to go to Mangalore for their clinical training. With the clinical program commencing at Manipal in 1969 with the setting up of Kasturba Hospital, it became a full-fledged independent college and Mangalore becoming a separate constituent college, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. After finishing their Anatomy and Physiology courses the students of KMC completed their 3 years of clinical training and 1 year of rotating internship in KMC Mangalore. The KMC was under the Karnataka University Dharwar and MBBS degrees were awarded to the students as from the Kasturba Medical College Mangalore. ref. All the first 10 years MBBS graduates of Kasturba Medical College are given their Diplomas from The Karnataka University Dharwar and printed as from Kasturba Medical College Mangalore.
