The 2016 Malaysia Deaf Games, officially known as the 19th Malaysia Deaf Games was a multi-sport event held in Sarawak, four months after the 2016 Sarawak state election and two months after the 2016 Sukma Games and the 2016 Malaysia Para Games from 30 September 2016 to 6 October 2016 with 44 events in 4 sports and disciplines featured in the games.^[1]

This was the first time Sarawak host the games. Sarawak is the eleventh state to host the games after Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Selangor, Kedah, Johor, Pahang, Kelantan, Perak, Terengganu and Malacca. Sarawak is also the first state to host the Malaysia Deaf Games based on the rotation system of the Sukma Games host, a recently introduced hosting system of the Malaysia Deaf Games. This means that begin this games edition onwards, Malaysia Deaf Games is held at the venue where the Sukma Games last held.

The final medal tally was led by the Federal Territory, followed by Sabah and host Sarawak. Several games records were broken during the games. The Games were deemed generally successful with the rising standard of deaf sports competition amongst the Malaysian states.

Host city

This is the 19th edition of Malaysia Deaf Games since its introduction in 1985. It will be the first time the state held such a national sporting event. All states held their respective Malaysia Para Games except Sabah, Perlis and Negeri Sembilan.

The 19th Malaysia Deaf Games had 5 venues for the games.^[2]

Volunteers

The organisers estimated that about 600 volunteers are needed to successfully host the games.^[3]

The logo and mascot of the 2016 Malaysia Deaf Games is a hornbill, the state animal of Sarawak.^[4] The hornbill is the icon of the State of Sarawak. Its association with the various ethnicities makes it one of the most important fauna of the state. Furthermore, its incorporation into the state"s Coat of Arms cements the association with Sarawak. The traditional shield features local ethnic design unique to Sarawak. It represents the integration of diversity,a rich heritage and a state of readiness to face future challenges. The combination of the colours red,black and yellow derives its origin from the flag of Sarawak. Red represents Perseverance & Courage, Black represents Resourcefulness, solidarity and integrity of the athletes and Yellow represents Transformation towards perfection and the 'Gold standard'

Medal table

A total of 132 medals comprising 44 gold medals, 44 silver medals and 44 bronze medals were awarded to athletes. The host Sarawak's performance was their best overall, and were placed third overall among participating states.
