Season summary

During the summer of 2004, a new era started for Inter: Roberto Mancini, former Lazio trainer, became the new coach.^[1] His official debut came in August, when the side had to face FC Basel in Champions League third preliminary round: Inter won on a 5–2 aggregate.^[2] In the first part of season, Inter was unbeaten for a long time: however a lot of draws came, even 13 in 19 league matches.^[3][4]

His record was broken in late February, due to a 1–0 loss in Milan derby:^[5] it resulted the first defeat since May 2004. Citizen rivals of Milan also caused the elimination in Champions, as the challenge shown off in quarter-finals.^[6] After have reached the third place, with 18 games ended in draw (almost the half of whole league), in June the side won his first trophy since 1998 UEFA Cup: beating Roma for a 3–0 total, Coppa Italia returned in Inter's trophy room.^[7]
