Persipura Jayapura, or Persipura, is an Indonesian football club based in Jayapura, Papua. The club was founded in 1963 and currently competes in the Indonesia Soccer Championship A. Persipura plays their home matches in Mandala Stadium.

Persipura is considered as one of the most successful teams in eastern Indonesia and in the modern era of Indonesian football. They have won the 2005 Liga Indonesia Premier Division, the Indonesia Super League for three times (in 2008-2009, 2010-2011, and 2013), the 2009 Indonesia Community Shield, and the 2011 Indonesia Inter Island Cup. They also managed to become runners-up of the Indonesia Super League for three times (in 2009-2010, 2011-2012, and 2014), as well as the Piala Indonesia for three times in (2006, 2008, and 2009). Their successful run in the Super League was all thanks to Jacksen F. Tiago, as he was chosen to coach Persipura starting from 2008, the year when the Super League started.

Persipura became the first Indonesian team to reach the semi-finals of AFC Cup, a major continental competition, in 2014. Other than that, they have produced many players that have been used by the Indonesia national team such as, Rully Nere, Eduard Ivakdalam, Boaz Solossa, Ricardo Salampessy, Ian Louis Kabes, Imanuel Wanggai, Titus Bonai, and so on.

History

Foundation and early years (1963–1994)

Persipura's history is mysterious. The club's administrators cannot fully make sure that the club was founded in 1963, since there are also proof that suggests the club might have been founded in 1965, 1962, or even 1950.[1] Other than that, the administrators also cannot fully make sure Persipura's original name.

The early years were not filled with a lot of achievements. They only managed to win the Perserikatan First Division two times in 1979 and 1993, other than that they were runners-up in the 1980 Perserikatan season.[2]

Modern era and recent history (1994–present)

Their first achievement in the modern era is by winning the 2005 Liga Indonesia Premier Division under coach Rahmad Darmawan.[2] PT. Persipura Papua was established to fulfill the requirement to compete in the Indonesia Super League.[3] Since the introduction of the Indonesia Super League under coach Jacksen F. Tiago, they have enjoyed a successful run by winning three titles and finished three times as runner-up. They have produced many players that have been used by the Indonesia national football team such as, Eduard Ivakdalam, Boaz Solossa, Ricardo Salampessy, Ian Louis Kabes, Imanuel Wanggai, Titus Bonai, and so on.
