Nalla Idathu Sambandham (English: The Good Alliance) is 1958 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by K. Somu.[1][2] It was the debut production of writer A. P. Nagarajan, who co-produced the film with V. K. Ramasamy. The story was provided by Ramasamy himself, while screenplay and dialogues were written by A. P. Nagarajan.[3][4] It stars M. R. Radha, Prem Nazir, Sowcar Janaki and M. N. Rajam in the lead roles. The film's soundtrack and background score were composed by K. V. Mahadevan.[5]

Plot

A wealthy man (V. K. Ramasamy) thinks that the only way to change the attitude of his wayward son (M. R. Radha) is to get him married. He arranges a marriage for his son with a friend's daughter (Sowcar Janaki). Radha, who is reluctant to get married, assures his sister (M. N. Rajam), who is the only person he loves and answers to, that he will be present at the wedding ceremony. As promised, he arrives just in time to tie the knot. Radha's wife marries him with high hopes, but her dreams are shattered when she gets to know the real face of Radha who loves living on the criminal edge of life. In the end, Radha's sister, a nurse by profession, falls in love with a police officer (Prem Nazir) who is his brother in law but has not met him due to circumstances and marries him, while Radha and his wife die while she tries to save him from the bullets of the police fired by her own brother.

The title is a play on how groom's family lies their way into arranged marriages.

Production

The film marked the production debut of A. P. Nagarajan. He co-founded a production company named "Lakshmi pictures" with actor V. K. Ramasamy.[6][7] Ramasamy provided the story, while Nagarajan wrote the screenplay and dialogues for the film. The film was shot in Madras and Salem.[8]

Soundtrack

The film's music was composed by K. V. Mahadevan[9] and lyrics were written A. Maruthakasi and A. Sa. Narayanan. Playback singers are Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, L. R. Eswari,[10] G. Kasthuri, T. R. Kajalakshmi, and Udutha.

The film established L. R. Eswari's career as a playback singer.[6][11]

Reception

The film was released on 4 February 1958 and was successful at the box office.[8] The performances of M. R. Radha, Sowcar Janaki and V. K. Ramasamy received critical acclaim. The film marked a turning point in Radha's career.[12]
