Marcelo Faria Fernandes (born 20 April 1974), known as Marcelo Fernandes or simply Marcelo, is a Brazilian retired footballer who played as a central defender, and the current assistant coach of Santos.
Playing career
Born in Santos, São Paulo, Marcelo played amateur football until his 20's, and began his career at Portuguesa Santista.[1] He moved to Santos in 1992, but after failing to break into the club's starting XI, was loaned to Rio Branco de Americana,[2] Remo, Botafogo-SP, América-RN and Atlético Mineiro, the last one already in 1998.[3][4]
Marcelo was released by Peixe in 1999, and played for Rio Branco-ES, América-RN, Criciúma, Joinville,[5] Náutico,[6] Portuguesa[7] and ABC. He retired with the latter in 2003, aged 32.
Post-playing career
In 2011 Marcelo joined former club Santos' staff, being appointed as assistant manager. On 5 March 2015, after Enderson Moreira's dimissal, he was named interim manager.[8]
On 12 March, after a 2–1 home win against rivals Palmeiras, Marcelo was definitely appointed as manager.[9] On 9 July, after only winning three out of 30 points, he returned to his previous assistant role, being replaced by Dorival Júnior.[10]
