While lost in the woods, Denny and Buzz Crocker come across a mysterious man named Flynn, who unbeknownst to them is in fact a cab driver who died years ago as a result of a crash. Flynn helps lead them to someone who he says can help them get home, a very unusual man named Dr. Vink. On the way to Dr. Vink's cottage, Flynn inquires if they're any good at solving riddles; Denny and Buzz wonder why he would ask such a thing. Once Denny and Buzz arrive at Dr. Vink's cottage, they are also asked by him how they are at solving riddles. Dr. Vink tells the boys that if they want to get home they must solve his riddles. His first riddle for the boys is an easy one, "How far can you walk into the woods?" that Buzz is able to solve quickly, with the answer being halfway. Then he presents a very tough riddle that he states nobody has been able to solve before, "What has no weight, can be seen by the naked eye, and if put in a barrel will make the barrel lighter?". Denny and Buzz now have the opportunity to solve it in order to call their parents, but Buzz is stumped. Vink informs them that they can get his help if they give him a specimen showing them somebody's hand in a glass jar. They leave the cottage and go to where Dr. Vink says a taxi cab will pick them up in the woods. A cab shows up mysteriously and the driver turns out to be Flynn. He says he thought he would be seeing the boys again, thinking they would be the ones to solve Dr. Vink's riddle. He then shows them that it was his hand Dr. Vink took for not being able to solve the riddle in exchange for a generous tip for taking Vink to his cottage, saying he was in an accident that killed him. Denny and Buzz still have a little bit of time before the cab crashes into the tree, which has been happening for the last 40 years since Flynn died. And now they must try their hand at solving the riddle in order to save themselves from the fatal crash as well as free all of Dr. Vink's victims' spirits so they can finally be at rest. Zeebo the Clown, a corrupt circus performer, steals money from the circus and tries to escape from the authorities by hiding in the funhouse. However, it catches fire, presumably because of Zeebo's love for cigars, and he dies. Years later, Weegee, his little sister Kathy, and his friend Josh come across the rebuilt funhouse, called Laughing in the Dark, and Weegee asks Josh if he had ever been inside, Josh replies that he hasn't. He walks closer to the funhouse and encounters a strange man who claims he runs the place. The man wonders why Josh doesn't believe in Zeebo, saying Zeebo is waiting for whoever goes into the funhouse. He mentions "Pick the right door and you'll go free. Pick the wrong door and there he'll be". Weegee and Kathy are too scared to go inside and keep their distance, believing it is haunted by the ghost of Zeebo, based on what other kids have seen and heard inside. But Josh doesn't believe it to be true, scoffing at the possibility of a ghost clown haunting the funhouse. The strange man asks Josh if he's going to go through and Josh says that he might another time, to which the man says he'll be there, he's always there. Weegee questions why Josh didn't go inside the funhouse if he doesn't believe in Zeebo, claiming that Josh is just as scared of going inside as he and Kathy. Weegee subsequently dares Josh to go in and he accepts, deciding to prove that he went through by finding the clown dummy, which is modeled after Zeebo, and stealing its nose. They return to Playland in order for Josh to steal the nose. The strange man appears once again as Josh is nearing the entrance and he asks once more if Josh is going to go in. Just before Josh goes inside, the strange man oddly states "It's the most fun in the park when you're laughing in the dark." He soon learns that the legend is indeed true when Zeebo comes back for revenge to regain his stolen nose. Guest Star: Christian Tessier as Josh

Amanda Cameron is a bookish teenage girl who goes to stay with her aunt Dottie and her rather spoiled and stuck-up cousin, Beth, for the summer while her parents are away in Northern Canada for an archaeological dig. Beth isn't exactly friendly to Amanda and she's told that she can only hang out with Beth and her friends if she spends a night alone in the house next door, which is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young deaf girl. Beth ends up paying the price for her cruelty when she is trapped in the mirror and it's up to Amanda to help the ghost find her mother before it's too late. When she succeeds in reuniting them, Amanda tells Beth that she will let her out of the mirror under one condition: she must treat her and her friends better. Guest Star: Laura Bertram as Amanda

One night, Dougie and his friend Kevin decide to play a trick on Miss Clove, an old woman who lives in a creepy house. On Halloween night, they trick-or-treat at her house only to find that she has a special treat for them. They receive a magical twisted claw that can grant them three wishes apiece. They soon find out that the wishes come true, but at a terrifying price. The story is based on "The Monkey's Paw." Note: This is the Halloween pilot episode.

Danny (short for Danielle) and her parents vacation at a house overseen by an unusual young man named Peter, who keeps mirrors all over the house and hates having his picture taken and looking into mirrors. Danny soon learns the truth behind Peter's strange behavior and seemingly eternal youth: he had been stealing everyone else's youth to keep himself young. She stops him by taking his picture and trapping him in a chamber to restore her parents back to their proper ages, sending Peter back to his true age.

Ross is a teenage boy who loves to play pinball at the local mall. Short on cash, he asks his friend Mr. Olson for a job in his repair shop and discovers a pinball machine in the back of the store. Mr. Olson asks Ross to watch after the store while he is at lunch and tells him specifically not to touch the pinball machine in the back. Despite Mr. Olson's warning, Ross plays the game, loses track of time, and gets locked inside the mall after closing. But what's worse is that the characters from the pinball game have entered the real world. Ross must now defeat a wicked witch, a group of zombies, and a terrifying man who wishes to be king in order to save Princess Sophie and himself.

Julie, a young French immigrant who's having trouble fitting in at her new school, is followed by the ghost of a hippie girl, Candy Warren. After finding the girl's necklace in her locker, Julie is able to time travel to 1968 and witness the chemistry lab accident that took the young girl's life, and is given the opportunity to change history. With the help of her new friend Chris, who makes Candy's teacher, Mr. Shaffner, realize what could've happened if he and Julie weren't there to prevent it. Returning to the present, Chris and Julie discover that Candy is now the assistant vice principal of their school and Shaffner has since retired from teaching.

Billy and his adopted sister Karen like to spend all their free time playing hockey on the empty 13th floor of their apartment building. One day, the regular elevator operator disappears and they find that the floor is now being used by a company to manufacture toys and games. Aspiring writer Sean Hackett finds an old typewriter in his house that once belonged to a writer who mysteriously vanished. He uses the typewriter to write a few short stories, but soon finds that whatever he types comes to life as it's read. Things seem harmless enough until he writes a story for English class that puts his best friend and the girl he loves in danger. Thinking quickly, Sean types up a note that reads none of the stories are real to save his best friend.

While driving back home from a carnival, a babysitter and the two children she's looking after get lost. When their car breaks down, she goes inside a house to call for help. Trouble begins when she disappears and the kids soon find out that while they aren't the only ones in the house, they're the only ones that are alive. Their only hope in escaping comes in the form of a helpful female ghost who must right the wrongs of her former master's crimes.

Two young pet detectives trying to figure out why all the neighborhood cats are disappearing find a clue when looking into the backyard of a neighbor. He seems to have a rather large collection of cat collars hidden in his backyard. They begin to suspect that he's a werewolf but unfortunately no one believes them.

Five years ago, a boy named Ricky Hagerty drowned after he and his red bicycle fell into the river when the side railing of the bridge broke. His best friend Mike Buckley tried to save him but failed. Ever since that day, Mike has felt guilty for what happened, and often had nightmares about trying to save Ricky from his demise. Mike begins to see Ricky's ghost and the red bicycle everywhere, and soon learns that his old friend is trying to help him avoid making the same mistake twice.

Todd starts doing the one thing that he's wanted to do since his father died -- further his interest in magic. He becomes an assistant to the great magician Shandu and learns the rules of being a magician; only let the audience see what you want them to see, never touch another magician's wand unless he hands it to you, never get caught in your own reflection, and always leave the audience wanting more. But trouble ensues when Todd makes an unwise decision to take Shandu's wand and use it for himself.

Two siblings, Jazz and Augie, are sent to boarding school while their parents are away. They immediately notice that the school is quite different and has some rather strange rules: only calm, soothing tones are allowed inside the school and the students are given something to eat for dessert called 'spunge'. Jazz and Augie soon discover the dark secret of the school. That is, the headmaster and his wife have been members of a species who have been nurturing eggs for many years, the eggs will eventually hatch and populate the world with lizard people. Note: This is one of the first episodes to use big creature effects, which was done for the giant lizard creature.

Two siblings, Jack and Kenny, move from a tough city into a calm new neighborhood, where they befriend a group of hide 'n' seekers. The group likes to play their game in a graveyard rumored to be haunted by the ghost of the old caretaker. They soon find that it might be more than a rumor. But looks can be deceiving, when it's revealed that the old man is in fact alive and the kids are indeed dead. Note: This is Nathaniel Moreau and Rachel Blanchard's final episode. In "The Tale of the Midnight Ride," Gary mentions that they moved away.

After moving into a new apartment complex with her newly divorced mother, Stacy finds herself without any friends. Soon however, she befriends an older woman named Madeline that lives in a nearby apartment, and the two start to spend quite a bit of time together. But when Stacy breaks a promise to visit Madeline on one specific afternoon, Madeline is enraged and comes after Stacy. Soon after Stacy apologizes for what happened, Madeline realizes she can't prevent her from making new friends. To make it up to her, Stacy convinces her mother to move into the apartment that Madeline used to occupy.

Two prank-phone callers, Jake and Chris, learn that the telephone is a serious matter and should not be used as a toy. A squad of vigilantes called the Phone Police bust anyone who does not follow the rules of the phone. Not only can the Phone Police put you in jail, they can erase your entire existence.

A young girl named Melissa goes to the countryside to spend a summer with her uncle and aunt and her best friend Susan. However, upon arriving she discovers that Susan's family has moved back to the city and that Susan is missing. Soon Melissa discovers that a mysterious dollhouse in the attic of Susan's house may be responsible for her friend's disappearance. To set things right, Melissa must go inside the dollhouse and rescue Susan.

When she buys a carved stone from Sardo's Magic Mansion she discovers that it allows her to go back to a time to when another family was living in her new home. Josh and Cleo's family vacation is canceled for the millionth time when Dr. Capel-Smith stops their father on his way out of the museum and finds a mummy buried there. There's a legend of a curse for anyone who digs it up, but only Josh believes it. They help research the Ring of Eternity and the Elixir of Life, both pf which are said to be buried with the remains of Mina the Egyptian queen. But when they go to pick up some pictures and find the artifacts, they also find that the mummy seems to have come to life. Things get even more complicated when their house is ransacked by someone who wants the power for their own, later revealed to be Dr. Capel-Smith himself. Guest Star: Danny Cooksey as Josh Dugan. Note: James Carroll Jordan who portrays Dr. Capel-Smith is credited as James W. Carroll in this episode.

A teenager named Johnny thinks he's just met the girl of his dreams when he puts on a mysterious ring that won't come off. Trouble begins when he learns that years ago, she was killed in a car accident, and he believes she wants to lure him to an early grave. When Johnny seeks his sister Erica's help, he learns the truth of his own death from the accident, and his girlfriend was trying to help him cross over. Note: Director M. Night Shyamalan credits this episode as his inspiration for the movie Sixth Sense.

Aaron and Doug know something is strange about their new house when things start shaking and rearranging themselves for no reason. He learns that her twin sister Laura died the year before when the candles she was lighting for a spell set the room on fire. Doug is suffering the same kind of fever Laura had before she tried to rid the house of the resident demon that nobody else believed existed. Dr. Vink is back and now running his own restaurant called "The Wild Boar". After staff members continually decide to just quit at the drop of a hat, two employees soon discover why. Dr. Vink makes his famous soup with a special ingredient that he gets from his employees' fear. However, the two accidentally release the creature that gathers the fear and give it the ability to prey upon anyone. Guest Stars: Neve Campbell as Nonnie Walker and Aron Tager as Dr. Vink. And the game's winner will not only release those in the woods but also be freed from the tree - while the loser must stay behind. In the end, Peter is able to save his sister and Mark, but also Nathaniel(now an old man) who had been trapped from the curse he was inflicted with when he continued to play the Forever Game. As Emily, Nicki discovers her medical bracelet that she accidentally dropped and shows it to her live-in nurse, which helps avert her untimely death and allows Nicki to return home to the present.
