Korom (the traditional local pronunciation is "Ko-ro-m") is a village in Payyanur, Kerala. This village have an important place in the history of Communist movement in Kerala. The village is renowned for the famous Hindu temple, Chenankavu Bhagavathi Temple where the Goddess Bhagavathi is enshrined and attracts a number of Bhagavathi devotees. Village also have Muchilottu Kavu, a Hindu shrine where some of the most famous Theyyam performances are being held annually. Another famous theyyam performance of Korom is at Sree Koormba Kavu which is celebrated annually.

History

korom is one of the village near payyannur. Mavila family was the biggest landlords of that area. Farmers of Korom, Payyanur Farka marched to the rice-godown of the landlord Alakkat Mavila Kunhambu Nambiar and took control of it and distributed the rice stored there among them to protest against the hoarding and black-marketing (happened in 1948). MSP (Malabar Special Police) force arrested the volunteers including KP Kunhikkannan, the leader of the "Karshaka Sangham" upon the request of the landlord. To protest against these arrests people marched to the spot where the volunteers were kept under police custody. Police started firing to the procession, which resulted in the death of a harijan youth called Pokkan. Pokkan was the first martyr in Payyanur Farka in the 1948-movement. This historic incident happened on 12 April 1948. Till this day, April 12 is observed as Korom martyr's day.

Governance

Korom is a civil village with an elected village council. It falls within the areas of Payyanur municipality and Taliparamba taluk. Both councils are responsible for different aspects of local government.

In the 2001 census, the village had a population of 4486.

Korom is located at It has an average elevation of 19 metres (52 feet). Climate is tropical, with an average annual temperature of 29oC. Village of Korom is typical among North Kerala localities, facilitating the breeding of felis domesticus.

Education

Village has one High school -Korom Government High; two Upper primary school -Korom Devisahayam UP School; Muthathy Saraswathi Vilasam UP one Lower primary school - Korom Mukkothadam LP and one polytechnic (Korom government Women's "Poly"). There is also an engineering college managed by a private trust.

Places of religious worship

Korom Sree Chenankavu Bhagavathi Temple (Temple of goddess Bhagavathi at Korom) is a small but exquisite temple in the center of this village. Korom Ayyappan Kavu is a shrine for lord Ayyappa, situated at North-East of the village.

The village also has two Catholic churches; St. Lucy Convent (Religious Teachers Filippini, of the Italian St. Lucy Filippini) and Christ the King Church (a mission of St. Joseph’s Church, Punchakkad).

Transportation

The national highway passes through Perumba junction. Goa and Mumbai can be accessed on the northern side and Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram can be accessed on the southern side. The road to the east of Iritty connects to Mysore and Bangalore. The nearest railway station is Payyanur on Mangalore-Palakkad line. Trains are available to almost all parts of India subject to advance booking over the internet. There are airports at Kannur, Mangalore and Calicut. All of them are international airports but direct flights are available only to Middle Eastern countries.
