The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) was established in 1959 and since then it has been serving the economy of Pakistan and has continuously contributed to its development and progress. The KCCI always tries to support and serve the private companies and help it to solve its problems.

History

The Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Karachi is a premier Chamber of the country, representing the mainstream of economic activities by virtue of its location in industrial and commercial hub of the country. KCCI was formed in 1959 through the amalgamation of four trade bodies in Karachi at that time, namely, the Pakistan Merchants Association, Buyers and Shippers Chamber, Chamber of Commerce Pakistan and All Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It was registered under the Trade Organization Ordinance 1961, which regulates the working of the Trade Bodies in the country. The Chamber and its building’s history date back to 8 July 1934 when Mahatma Gandhi laid the foundation stone of Karachi Indian Merchants Association. Its a historic monument of Pakistan

Composition

The Chamber is affiliated with the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It has two classes of membership, namely, Members and Town Associations. This Chamber has currently around 17,000 direct members both industrialists and traders. Seven Industrial Town Associations, namely, S.I.T.E. Association of Industry, Landhi Association of Trade & Industry, Korangi Association of Trade & Industry, Federal 'B' Area Association of Trade & Industry, North Karachi Association of Trade & Industry, S.I.T.E. Superhighway Association of Industry, Bin Qasim Association of Trade & Industry are affiliated with it.

Thus, the Chamber's effective membership comes to around 50,000. As a consequence of its location in a commercial, financial and industrial center of the country, it represents the mainstream of economic activities. It is considered to be the largest Chamber of Pakistan and the subcontinent. It is also considered to be the eighth largest business elective representative body of the world in terms of its membership base.

Management

The organization's policies and programs are determined by the 30 members of Managing Committee which are elected by the members, out of which have retire every year and in their place, new members are inducted through election. There are two reserved seats for Women Entrepreneurs. One seat each is reserved for representatives/nominations from Chamber's affiliated seven industrial town associations. The President elected by the members (General Body) and the Managing Committee every year elects Senior Vice President and Vice-President. President controls the working of office and staff and directs all matters of the Chamber, with the assistance of Senior Vice-President and Vice-President.

Union

Karachi Chamber of Commerce employees Union is working under the guidance of Mehboob Elahi Makhmoor and it complanined that Secretary General of KCCI is involved gross human rights violations and is threatening and abusing employees of KCCI and because of his behavior and continuously keeping educated employees on contract basis refusing basic rights to its employees many employees had left KCCI and joined other organizations or left the country half heartedly. KCCI Union complain was published in many newspapers like Jang, Jasarat, Imsaal and others.

Research and development

Karachi Chamber of Commerce has a research and Economic Development Department.Prominent researcher Dr.Syed Mehboob served in KCCI research department and produced several research reports. Now this department is headed by Uzma Tasleem. The Research & Development Cell was redefined by Mr. Siraj Kassam Teli during the year 2012-13.[2]
