The NorthCap University is an autonomous university situated in Sector 23-A, Gurgaon, Haryana, India. It was founded in 1996 by Educate India Society, registered under the Registration of Societies Act of 1860 as an Engineering Institute, to provide education in Technical and Management. Formerly it was under Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak.[1]

The Institute gained the status of private university in the Academic Year 2009-10, and was renamed ITM University under section 2(f) of the UGC Act 1956[2] and PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES ACT NO 25 OF 2009, Government of Haryana.

The Campus

The University is located in Sector 23-A, Gurgaon, Haryana, which is about 5 km from Indira Gandhi International Airport. The campus is spread over an area of 10 acres of land in urban area.

The university increased its intake capacity in January 2014 with the addition of a new five-storey academic block that includes double basement parking, an auditorium that seats 460, seminar rooms and tutorial rooms.

Schools

The University has four schools offering courses at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level, namely the School of Engineering & Technology, School of Management, School of Law and School of Professional Attachment,[3] as well as a Centre for Languages Learning.

School of Engineering and Technology

The School has five academic departments:

School of Management

The school offers an MBA course and three undergraduate courses, namely a bachelor of business administration, bachelor of commerce and bachelor of science economics (Hons).

School of Law

The school has a 5-year integrated B.B.A-LL.B. (Honours) Degree Programme, which integrates the study of law with management, as well as a masters of law programme.

School of Professional Attachment

Besides organising internships and campus placements, the school also conducts short value-added programmes for students of the other schools.

Centre for Languages Learning

The Centre for Languages learning, conducts certification courses in English as well as foreign language courses.

Sports facilities

The university's sporting facilities include areas for cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis and table tennis. An athletics track as well as a multipurpose sports arena (still to be constructed) with flood lights to facilitate night time play is available.

Student activities

Several clubs and societies conduct events throughout the year. The bi-annual journal VectorTech serves as the principal source of campus news. In addition, a monthly newsletter is published.

Research

To foster learning discovery and research, the University places great emphasis on sponsored and academic research. Faculty of the university have been awarded a variety of research projects by the Department of Science & Technology, Defence Research and Development Organisation, All India Council of Technical Education, University Grants Commission and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Govt. of India and from other leading private organisations. Research awards are given to faculty of the University for publishing research papers in international journals and conferences and for authoring and publishing of textbooks. Faculty is regularly sponsored for conferences and seminars to keep abreast with the latest technologies. Departments also publish their internal journals like Voyager - The Journal of Computer Science & Information Technology, Vani - Journal of Department of Applied Science and Humanities, Livewire - Journal of Department of EECE and Impulse - Journal of Department of Mechanical Engineering are regularly published.

Rankings

In 2016 the university was ranked as the best private university in the Delhi/NCR and Haryana region and 82nd overall in the NIRF University Ranking conducted by the MHRD, Govt of India.[4] It was previously ranked 470th in India in the Outlook Engineering Colleges Handbook published in June 2014[5] in the "Top 10 Emerging Engineering Colleges" in India Tod[6] It received a Level 7, the highest level, in the 2013-14 "E-Gov Report".[7]

ITB Ireland 

The University has an effective MoU in place with ITB Ireland and is collaborating significantly in the mobility of students and faculty. The first students exchange started in September 2011 for semester abroad programme, continues and the feedback received from the students, on the institution and the exposure is indeed very positive. Various collaborative schemes for UG and PG students have accordingly been rolled out. Both institutions signed an ongoing MoU for further 3 years in a ceremony organised in the august presence of Mr. Ciaran Cannon T.D, Ireland's Minister for Education and Skills and the Ambassador of Ireland in India.

Michigan University

The visit of the University faculty to Michigan University, marked the beginning of its relations with Michigan Technological University. This was followed by an initiative by both the Universities to collaborate in organising an international workshop funded by Indo-US Science and Technology Forum to further the exchange of research development knowledge in the critical area of climatic change and impact on water resources globally. An international conference was held at ITM University in March 2012. Both the universities further agreed to establish a joint research centre, both at ITM University and Michigan University, to make inroads into the area of water resources. Michigan University has proposed academic mobility of ITMU's UG and PG-level students of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, to be followed by the Department of CSE & IT. The relations between the two universities are expected to bring substantial value to the students and faculty and boost our research capabilities.

University of Chester 

An MoU with the University of Chester, UK, was signed on 10 January 2012, following the visit of Professor Phillip Harris, Executive Dean (Faculty of Business Enterprise and Lifelong Learning). The Chester Business School has over 1500 students with campuses at Chester and Warrington, and has a good reputation at undergraduate and postgraduate-level courses. It is a university which squarely meets the requirement for students' academic mobility and research cooperation. Taking it forward, the School of Management has worked out schemes of a semester or year abroad in UG and PG studies. The course structures of both the universities have been mapped, and areas of students' mobility identified. The schemes have been put into the domain knowledge of the students.

Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (India)

A MoU was signed with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (India) branch of CIArb, UK, a non-profit organisation which focuses exclusively on creating awareness on arbitration as an effective means to settle disputes, and runs programmes and courses on arbitration in India. Students from the School of Law would benefit a great deal by this tie-up. While doing their BBA-LLB (Hons) course, they would be in a position to add to their professional graph in one of the most sought-after futuristic areas, the field of arbitration.

n+i

A delegation of French engineering institutes visited the University on 6 December 2012 and on 15 March 2013, and signed an MoU on long-term academic and research cooperation as well as student exchange programmes, specifically at the post-graduation level. The n+i engineering network, which is a consortium of over 70 French Grandes Ecoles (elite engineering institutes), is the largest network in France. A MoU was signed in February 2013 to the mutual benefit of both.

Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City, University of Economic and Law (UEL)

A MoU was signed with University of Economics and Law (UEL), a member university of Vietnam National University of Ho Chi Minh City. The MoU is aimed towards collaboration on various areas of cooperation between the two Schools of Law, including short courses, exchange of students and teachers, joint journal publications and cooperation in research and publications.

Pukyong National University (PKNU), a Govt. University in South Korea

The University has entered into an academic tie up with PKNU for exchange of faculty members, research scholars, PG students and scientists. NCU is the only University in India with which PKNU has signed a MoU.

The Hogeschool van Amsterdan (HvA), University of Applied Sciences

HvA the largest inner-city institute for higher professional education in the Netherlands, is an international partner.

University of Western Australia

A delegation led by Professor Hema Sharda, Director, South Asia Relations, University of Western Australia, visited the University on 24 December 2012 and 18 January 2013 for forging academic ties between the two universities. The University of Western Australia is ranked amongst the top 100 global universities of the world and has high academic and research credentials, with international students from 80 countries. The delegation presented an opportunity to the students in Engineering and Management for PG and PhD programmes. The UWA also assured admissions with scholarships to deserving faculty for their PhD programmes. The University plans to further intensify their interaction, exploring the possibility of a long-term MoU with the UWA.

American Society of Quality (ASQ) India Ltd

A students' chapter was established with The American Society of Quality (ASQ) India Ltd to provide a certificate programmes for students. A Management Development Programme (MDP) for the executives, to certify trainers and develop PG Diploma programmes in 'Total Quality Management' (TQM) has been started. The scope has been further enhanced, as the student-led society has been outperforming by participating and organizing ASQ international events in the University. NCU is the first university in India to be selected by ASQ to sign an MOU and form a Students' Chapter.

Association of Commonwealth Universities

NCU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and is actively participating in all its affairs. The University recently won the prize in the Social Outreach category in a competition held in the UK. It also bagged an Honourable Mention prize for its 2012 Annual Report.

Association of Indian Universities (AIU)

The University is now a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). This will enable the University to refer to AIU for any educational guidance to help improve standards of instruction, examination, research, textbooks, scholarly publications, participation in youth festivals or sports activities, publishing bibliographies of doctoral theses, and other such programmes as may contribute to the growth and propagation of knowledge.

National Board of Accreditation (NBA)

The University has been granted accreditation for four BTech programmes, namely Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering till 2015.

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd

An MoU for academic collaboration with Power Grid Corporation of India, Gurgaon, a Navratna Public Sector Enterprise and one of the largest transmission lines utilities in the world has been signed in December 2013. The collaboration will benefit students of NCU for internship, management development, research and training programmes. The University will organise, will organise executive education programmes, conduct and document case studies, organisational and development training programmes for Power Grid. It will also collaborate with Power Grid in consultancy assignments in India and abroad. The relations between the two are expected to bring substantial value to both parties.
