Goka (五霞町, Goka-machi) is a town located in Sashima District, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. As of September 2015, the town had an estimated population of 8,812 and a population density 381 persons per km². The total area was 23.11  km².

Geography

Goka is located in the flatlands in the very western portion of Ibaraki Prefecture, bordered by Saitama Prefecture to the west and south. The Tone River, along with the Edo River and Naka River pass through the town.

History

The area of present-day Goka was part of Shimosa Province and was transferred to Ibaraki Prefecture in 1875 after the start of the Meiji period. The area was organized into the village of Goka within Nishikatsuragi District, Ibaraki Prefecture with the establishment of the municipalities system on April 1, 1889. The district was abolished in 1896, becoming part of Sashima District.

Goka was raised to town status on June 1, 1996.

Goka has two elementary schools and one middle school.

At present, the town is not served by any passenger railway line. The nearest station is Kurihashi on the JR East’s Tohoku Main Line.
