FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, operated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.[1]

The system was initially set up as a pilot project in 2014 on the stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The system was implemented on the Delhi - Mumbai arm of the Quadrilateral on 4 November 2014.[2] In July 2015, toll plazas on the Chennai - Bengaluru stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral started accepting FASTag payments.[3] By April 2015, FASTag was rolled out to 247 toll plazas on national highways across India, representing 70% of all toll plazas in the country at the time.[4]

As on 23 November 2016, 347 fee plazas out of 366 on national highways across the country accept FASTag payments.[5]

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is implementing Electronic Fee Collection (EFC) system on National Highways in the country to allow cashless transaction. In order to remove bottlenecks and ensure seamless movement of traffic and collection of fee as per notified rates, a cashless payment mechanism (FASTag) was rolled out based on the recommendations of a committee constituted under Shri Nandan Nilekani. The use of FASTag shall reduce traffic congestion and increase user convenience in making payments without stoppage at fee plazas thus saving on time, money and fuel. Electronic Fee Collection (EFC) system was rolled out w.e.f. 25.04.2016. As on 23.11.2016, 347 fee plazas out of 366 on national highways across the country have been integrated and made operational for EFC transaction. This information was given by the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Shri Munsukh L. Mandaviya in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
