Brownlow Cust, 1st Baron Brownlow FRS FSA (3 December 1744 – 25 December 1807), known as Sir Brownlow Cust, 4th Baronet, from 1770 to 1776, was a British Tory Member of Parliament.

Life

Brownlow was the son of Sir John Cust, 3rd Baronet, Speaker of the House of Commons, and Etheldred Payne, daughter of Thomas Payne. He was educated at Eton and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.^[1] In 1766 Brownlow was elected to the House of Commons for Ilchester, a seat he held until 1774, and then represented Grantham between 1774 and 1776. The latter year he was raised to the peerage as Baron Brownlow, of Belton in the County of Lincoln.^[2] The peerage was chiefly in recognition of his father's services. In 1776, he was made a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA).^[3] In 1783, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).^[4]

Family

Lord Brownlow married firstly Jocosa Katherina Drury, daughter of Sir Thomas Drury, 1st Baronet, in 1770. They had one daughter. After his first wife's early death in 1772 he married secondly Frances Bankes, daughter of Sir Henry Bankes, in 1775. They had six children. Lord Brownlow died in December 1807, aged 63, and was succeeded in his titles by his eldest son John Cust, who was created Earl Brownlow in 1815. His younger son, Edward Cust was created a baronet in 1876 (see Cust baronets).
