Adlai E. Stevenson High School is a public high school located in Livonia, Michigan, a suburb west of Detroit.

History

Adlai E. Stevenson High School was built in 1965 to accommodate the rising population of Livonia with the increased migration of people from Detroit to the suburbs during the turbulent 1960s. It was dedicated on October 24, 1965, United Nations Day, and the 20th anniversary of that body's founding, by Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Stevenson was the first high school in the nation named for the Fifth U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai E. Stevenson, who had died the day before the Livonia school board's decision on naming the new high school. The school's first graduating class graduated in June 1968.

Global Ed

Since 1977, Stevenson has featured a unique school-within-school program called Global education. The program is the only national and internationally recognized curriculum in Livonia. The program, accredited by the North Central Association, mixes English and Social Studies courses for all four years of High School. The goal of the program is to help students understand what is going on in their world from Livonia to China, and to prepare students for the challenges of living in an age of globalization.[1]

Athletics

Stevenson is a Class A athletic school and is part of the Kensington Lakes Activities Association in the Central Division of the Kensington Conference.

Athletic facilities

Stevenson's outdoor athletics' teams use Anders Field located directly behind Stevenson. It was named in memory of Lester C. Anders, Stevenson's first athletic director who died of lung cancer shortly after the school's opening. The basketball team uses the Jay W. Formsma Memorial Gymnasium, named after Stevenson's first principal. It is also where physical education classes are held.

Both the boys' and girls' tennis teams play on the ten tennis courts directly behind Stevenson, east of Anders Field. In addition to the outdoor facilities, Stevenson also has a field house. Stevenson's baseball and softball diamonds are located behind the school west of Anders Field. Stevenson's boys' and girls' swimming and diving teams use the swimming pool.
