Mersin İdmanyurdu (also Mersin İdman Yurdu, Mersin İY, or MİY) Sports Club; located in Mersin, east Mediterranean coast of Turkey in 2016–17. Mersin İdmanyurdu football team has participated in 2016–17 season in Turkish TFF First League in the league's 16th season since its foundation in 2001. 2015–16 season was the 8th season of Mersin İdmanyurdu football team in TFF First League, and 35th season in the second level division in Turkey since 1963. Team participated in 2016–17 Turkish Cup at second round and was eliminated immediately.

At the start of the season Hüseyin Çalışkan was club president. Levent Arıkdoğan has started as head coach. Hüseyin Çalışkan called for extraordinary congress and leaved the position. Ali Tekin was elected new president. Yusuf Şimşek replaced Arıkdoğan as head coach before 9th round league games.

2016–17 TFF First League participation

2016–17 TFF First League was played as "Türkiye Birinci Lig" for Spor-Toto has withdrawn and no new sponsorship was given for the season. Start day of the season is 19 August 2019 and the end day is 21 May 2016.[1] Champions and runners-up were promoted to 2017–18 Süper Lig. Following four teams were eligible for promotion play-offs to determine the third team to be promoted. Bottom three teams were relegated to 2017–18 TFF Second League.

Note: Due to financial difficulties, Mersin İdmanyurdu received 3 points deduction penalty before the start of the 9th round games and its position for 8th round was changed to 16th from 14th.

2016–17 Turkish Cup participation

2016–17 Turkish Cup was played for 55th time as Ziraat Türkiye Kupası for sponsorship reasons. The cup was played by 158 teams in three stages. In the first stage, a preliminary qualification round and three elimination rounds were played in one-leg elimination system. In the second stage, 32 teams played two-legs round-robin games in 8 groups, 4 in each. In the third stage, knock-out games were played in two-leg elimination system. Mersin İdmanyurdu attended the cup in 2nd elimination round and eliminated by Third League (fourth division) team Kızılcabölükspor.[4]

Management

Club management

On 11 January 2016 club congress had been held and Hüseyin Çalışkan had taken over the presidency of the club. Later Çalışkan sought for cession and called the congress for extraordinary session in June 2016. Finally, the congress was rallied on 28 September 2016 after several attempts. Ali Tekin, a businessman from İzmir, who is descent from Mut, Mersin, emerged as a candidate and became new president by unanimity. The new executive committee was formed as follows:[5]

2016–17 squad

Appearances, goals and cards count for 2016–17 TFF First League and Türkiye Kupası (2016–17 Turkish Cup) games. Only the players who appeared in game rosters were included.[9] Player's are listed in order of appearance. MİY could not signed with new players in Summer 2016, because TFF decided on transfer ban for MİY due to club' debt to former coach Giray Bulak and former player Joseph Boum.[10] The UEFA transfer ban due to removal of contract wit former player David Bičík had been applied for 2015 Winter and Summer transfer seasons. later TFF did not open transfer table in 2016 Winter and 2016 Summer transfer seasons. By the way, TFF has declared a three-point deduction penalty due to financial inefficiencies on 20 September 2016.[11] However, on 27 September 2016 it was declared by then president Çalışkan that the debts were discharged.[12]
