Richie Havens

Richard P. "Richie" Havens (21 Ocak 1941 - 22 Nisan 2013) Amerikalı folk müzik şarkıcısı ve gitarist. En çok yoğun ritmik gitar çalma tarzıyla (open tuning) bilinir. 1969'da Woodstock Festivali'nde sahne açılışını yapan ilk müzisyendir.

Kariyeri

Brooklyn'de doğan Havens dokuz kardeşinin en büyüğüydü. Küçük bir çocukken mahalle arakadaşlarıyla sokak köşelerinde doo-woop gruplarına katıldı ve 16 yaşında The McCrea Gospel Singers ile beraber sahneye çıktı. 20'li yaşlarında Brooklyn'den ayrıldı.

1967 yılında ilk albüm anlaşmasını yaptı ve Verve etiketiyle Mixed Bag isimli albümü çıktu. Bu ilk albümde “Handsome Johnny” (Havens ve Oscar ödüllü aktör Louis Gossett Jr. tarafından sonra tekrar yazıldı), “Follow” ve Bob Dylan’dan “Just Like A Woman” gibi şarkılar yar alıyordu.

Havens'in Woodstock'da sergilediği canlı performans birçok kesimce tanınması sağladı. Festival'de ilk sahneye çıkan müzisyendi ve üç saat sahne aldıktan sonra bis ile tekrar tekrar çağrıldı. Eski bir spritüele dayanan ve akorsuz çaldığı Motherless Child (Freedom) isimli doğaçlama şarkı ile daha sonra yayınlanan Woodstock filmi sayesinde geniş bir dinleyici kitlesi kazandı.
