Gout tuber detail.png

Gout tubers are a rare seed/food item obtained from Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup. Gout tubers can be planted in a herb patch, requiring 29 Farming and completion of Eadgar's Ruse, in order to produce goutweeds. It cannot be planted at the disease-free Troll Stronghold herb patch, nor the patch at Weiss. Goutweed can be traded to Sanfew in Taverley, for a random herb per goutweed. Growing goutweed to trade with Sanfew is generally inefficient, since the herbs received from Sanfew are random and gout tubers are very costly compared to standard herb seeds. If goutweed itself is needed, most players should obtain it from the cellar at the Troll Stronghold, due to the tuber's rarity and high trade value for its use in the medium Karamja Diary.

Gout tubers seem to be treated as food, with the additional property of being able to be planted. Gout tubers can also be eaten to heal 12 Hitpoints and restore 50 run energy. Eating a Gout tuber results in the message; "You eat the tuber. Hmmm, peculiar taste! It heals some run energy. It heals some health anyway.". Gout tubers will be turned to rotten food if you are attacked by a Ghast in the Mort Myre swamp. Gout tubers cannot be stored in the Seed vault. Despite its high value, Gout tubers are not placed into a player's grave upon death, as they are considered food. As with all food, the tuber will remain on the ground for 60 minutes before despawning and will not be moved to Death's Office.

Obtaining[edit | edit source]

A gout tuber before it is dug out of the ground.

A Gout tuber can only be obtained while hacking jungles during the Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup activity, or by trading other players. Sometimes after hacking down jungle during the activity, players will receive a message: You hack away at the remaining bush to reveal an unusual plant. The unusual plant has a 1% chance of appearing when an event takes place.[1] The overall average time to receive an event is around 64 ticks with constant jungle interaction and with slight variation between Woodcutting levels. In practice the time will be slower due to interruptions from jungle depletion and events. A player with moderate concentration can expect a tuber on average close to 1 hour 15 minutes. It should be highly noted that this is an overall average, and due to the low frequency of expected rolls some players may have much longer times to receive a tuber.

Players will need to use a spade on the plant to dig it up; doing so gives the player a tuber. Attempting to dig up someone else's Gout tuber results in the message, "It's not yours to dig.". Gout tubers will despawn after 10 minutes if not dug up. Gout tubers are locked to the player that found them for the duration that the player is logged in. As soon as the original owner of the tuber logs out, any player is able to dig up the tuber. The tuber will not re-lock to the original owner if the player logs back in. As soon as a player begins to dig up the tuber, it becomes locked to them and no one else is able to dig it up.

Safta Doc requires a gout tuber when making a gem-bladed machete for the player - having a gem-bladed machete created in this manner is a medium task in the Karamja Diary.

Changes[edit | edit source]

Date Changes
9 January 2020
(update | poll)

Players can now dig up healthy herb patches before they're fully grown. To prevent players from gaining experience repeatedly by planting and digging up herb seeds, the experience usually gained from planting them are now given when harvesting them, alongside the usual harvesting experience.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • A similar item to a Gout tuber identified as a Goutweedy lump appears in My Arm's Big Adventure when a human was boiled into a stew along with a lump of Gout tuber he possessed, the man was eaten but lumpy remnants of the tuber can be found in the Cooking Pot at Death Plateau.
  • Before an update on 30 March 2017, gout tubers could immediately be dug up by other players. If a player left it alone after it appears, someone else could dig it up. After the update tubers were locked to players so long as they are logged in.
