Były policjant Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) otrzymuje zlecenie od samego burmistrza, Nicholasa Hostetlera (Russell Crowe). Zadanie wydaje się być typową pracą prywatnego detektywa, polega na śledzeniu żony zleceniodawcy (Catherine Zeta-Jones) i zdobyciu dowodów jej niewierności.
