Virtua Tennis 4 to kolejna odsłona popularnej serii gier sportowych, pozwalających wcielić się w gwiazdy światowego tenisa ziemnego. Za jej wyprodukowanie odpowiedzialny jest zespół Hitmaker – słynne studio firmy SEGA, znane wcześniej jako AM3. Ma ono w dorobku m.in. trzy pierwsze odsłony marki Virtua Tennis, a także takie hity, jak Crazy Taxi oraz Sega Rally Championship.
Produkcję opracowano tradycyjnie z wykorzystaniem licencji ATP i WTA, dzięki czemu uruchamiając ją gracz otrzymuje możliwość przejęcia kontroli nad kilkudziesięcioma uczestnikami największych turniejów tenisa ziemnego (wśród nich m.in. Roger Federer oraz Andy Murray). Virtua Tennis 4 zawiera też rozbudowany tryb Kariery, w którym rozgrywka sprowadza się do rozwijania umiejętności zawodnika, m.in. poprzez udział w wyszukanych misjach treningowych, a także brania udziału w kolejnych zawodach.
