Terje Rypdal (ur. 23 sierpnia 1947 r. w Oslo) - norweski kompozytor i gitarzysta jazzowy. Uczył się gry na pianinie i trąbce w wieku 5 do 12 lat, a gry na gitarze uczył się sam w wieku lat 12. Jako kilkunastolatek grał w zespole The Vanguards w latach 1962-1967. Studiował muzykologię na uniwersytecie w Oslo oraz muzykę w konserwatorium w Oslo w latach 1970-1972. Począwszy od 1969 r. grywał z Janem Garbarkiem. W 1972 r. utworzył grupę Odyssey.

W młodości zafascynowany był muzyką Jimi Hendrixa, w późniejszym okresie raczej muzyką klasyczną. Jego muzyka łączy elementy new age, rocka i jazzu.

Od 30 lat nagrywa dla wytwórni płytowej ECM. W nagraniach jego albumów uczestniczyli tacy muzycy, jak Jan Garbarek, Bobo Stenson, Palle Mikkelborg, Ketil Bjørnstad, Miroslav Vitous, czy Jack DeJohnette. W Polsce występował w ramach Warsaw Summer Jazz Days w r. 2005 wraz z Ketilem Bjørnstadem.

Rypdal led a blistering rock trio through the 90s while at the same time writing symphonies and concertos. The two meet here with mixed, thought mostly good, results. Don't expect the ordinary and you won't be disappointed. The CD opens with a fun, accessible tune by the trio but quickly moves thorough a dense atmospheric piece and when the strings come in they are used both to blend and contrast the guitar trio parts. The title tune is a marvelous, brooding, granitic blend of strings and guitar. "But on the other hand" slowly builds such a palpable tension between strings and percussion that you'll probably need a minute to recover when it's over. "One for the roadrunner" is a searing, free style guitar. In between are pieces where the trio and strings dance, thrust and parry. Rypdal's unique guitar sings (and occasionally screams) throughout.
