Tytułu "Fight Club" chyba nikomu przedstawiać nie trzeba... Tytuł, który swego czasu narobił wielkiego szumu w filmowym świecie ze względu na swoją oryginalność i niecodzienną formę, a dzisiaj już posiada całą rzeszę zwolenników. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że David Fincher stworzył dzieło kultowe, obecnie na każdym kroku cytowane i wśród przykładów filmów niecodziennych sprawnie wymieniane. Niesamowity film z niesamowitą muzyką w wykonaniu grupy The Dust Brothers. W przypadku tej grupy większość osób posiada mylne informacje (sam wpadłem w te sidła) myśląc, iż to właśnie Chemical Brothers skomponowali muzykę do "Podziemnego Kręgu" - bowiem ta grupa nazywała się kiedyś właśnie The Dust Brothers (w składzie Tom Rowlands i Ed Simons). Natomiast opisywaną ścieżkę dźwiękową skomponowali The Dust Brothers w składzie John King i Mike Simpson - to grupa założone około 8 lat przed Chemical Brothers i nie mająca z nimi nic wspólnego. Podstawowa różnica między tymi składami jest taka, że Chemical Brothers jest z Wielkiej Brytanii, a The Dust Brothers z USA.

Jak można w skrócie przedstawić muzykę z "Podziemnego Kręgu"? A więc jest to klimatyczna, ciężka, zakręcona, momentami bardzo psychodeliczna i przygnębiająca ilustracja. Jedynie od czasu do czasu mamy do czynienia z jakimś "weselszym" fragmentem, cała reszta - podobnie jak film - trzyma w napięciu i maksymalnym skupieniu. To na pewno "kompozycja" zdecydowanie inna niż wszystkie typowe soundtracki - "Fight Club" to wspaniała, czysta elektronika z przeciągłym, potężnym basem (i to naprawdę potężnym basem! Fani znakomitego sprzętu audio będą z pewnością podekscytowani, czego przykładem może być chociażby kawałek "What Is Fight Club?". Z początku cały ten swoisty eksperyment całościowo nie przypomina muzyki filmowej, ale w połączeniu z obrazem daje perfekcyjny rezultat! Zresztą po obejrzeniu filmu ciężko wyobrazić sobie inną ilustrację do niego. Najlepszym przykładem niech będą kawałki: "Who Is Tyler Durden?", "Homework", wymieniony już "What Is Fight Club?", "Single Serving Jack" (szczególnie końcówka), "Space Monkeys"... Niewątpliwie to pozycja w sam raz dla fanów tzw. "elektroniki", a jedyną wadą (?) może być fakt, iż większość utworów może się wydać niektórym zbyt ciężka i zbyt zakręcona... Ale wybaczmy tym osobom ignorancję. Niestety płyta posiada bardzo duży brak, co pewnie już zanotowała większość jej nabywców i fanów filmu Finchera. Mianowicie chodzi o końcową, wspaniałą piosenkę Pixies, "Where Is My Mind?" (dla przypomnienia - scena, gdy walą się budynki), która nie znalazła się na oficjalnym wydaniu ścieżki - zgroza! Wprawdzie słyszałem z różnych źródeł o krążącej gdzieś wersji właśnie z tą piosenką, ale to raczej nic oficjalnego, więc niech zainteresowani nie robią sobie złudnych nadziei... To całkiem spory brak, nie da się ukryć. Soundtrack bez tej piosenki wiele traci - tym bardziej, że Pixies stworzyli utwór od razu przywodzący na myśl tytuł "Fight Club". I przez to niedopilnowanie ze strony producentów wyższa ocena niż 4 gwiazdki dla tej płyty jest niestety niemożliwa - nad czym nie tylko ja ubolewam...

I always hear about how these guys were behind Paul's Boutique and Odelay, but you never hear about their actual albums. That's probably because there aren't any. Maybe it's too much work, maybe they just like collaborating, or maybe they're going to bust out with one any minute, but whatever the reason may be, the score to Fight Club is their only solo album. There are a few songs here and there on soundtracks and such, but not that many and frankly they're nowhere near as good as this record.

If you've seen the movie, as I'm sure you have, the music will be instantly familiar to you. It's pretty high in the mix in the film and often the scenes and cuts are timed to the beat. That said, while the music adds a lot to the movie, the movie actually takes away from the music, as you cannot hear entire songs and their subtleties while listening to dialogue, watching for single frame cuts, and generally enjoying the movie. The album is not merely background noise for the movie, as say Menomena's Under An Hour is (good as it may be), nor is it variations on a theme a la the Kronos Quartet's Requiem For A Dream score. The album stands on its own musically, but owes a lot to the movie for its feel: a kind of constant, gleeful malice which permeates both.

There are several standouts, although the entire hour is great. The snappy beats and shifting character of the first track, the funk and horn section in the second, and the mysterious low frequency drone of the third are all excellent. The Dust Brothers make use of instrument samples as well as analog noise - buzzes and growls from old-school techno expertly recontextualized. There are a few startling moments on the album, literally, as the beat drops out for perhaps 10 seconds, then pops back in again doubled in power, making you jump. I love the album well so I'm hard pressed to think of any rough spots, though "Space Monkeys" doesn't really thrill, only fills the time between the tense "Commissioner Castration" and the apocalyptic "Finding the Bomb." You'll recognize the pause in "Stealing Fat" where there is dialogue in the movie, and you'll be deafened when it switches to the cacophany accompanying the opening credits. "Homework," which I'm giving to you, embodies the album well - shifting beats, diverse instruments, a slight feeling of ill will from the song like it hopes you're going to trip and fall, it all feels right.

You'd do well to pick up the whole thing, or at least just watch Fight Club again so you can check if you like the rest of the music. It's been on rotation for me for years, though, and hopefully it can take up a spot on your shelf for a while too.
