Na drugiej płycie firmowanej przez formację Amusement Parks On Fire w sposób niezwykle oryginalny shoegazing My Bloody Valentine spotyka się ze space rockiem spod znaku Spiritualized, atmosferycznymi wokalami Sigur Ros i post-rockowym atakiem gitarowym Mogwai. Tak twórcze i dojrzałe artystycznie odwołanie się do najlepszych brytyjskich tradycji rockowych z ostatnich 20 lat jest dziełem ledwie dwudziestoletniego Michaela Feericka, dziś uważanego za jedną z najciekawszych i najbardziej utalentowanych nowych osobowości na muzycznej scenie połowy pierwszej dekady XXI w.

Amusement Parks On Fire narodził się jako indywidualny projekt Feericka, który sam za własne pieniądze nagrał w 2005 r. tak niezwykły zestaw utworów, że opublikować go zdecydował się raczej z rezerwą do rocka podchodzący Geoff Barrow z Portishead na swym „labelu" Invada. Wkrótce dystrybucją płyty w USA zajęła się firma Filter, należąca do konglomeratu dystrybucyjnego BMG i odtąd sprawy potoczyły się z szybkością błyskawicy. W ciągu ledwie roku APOF z jednoosobowego projektu przeistoczył się w kwintet, który koncertował wraz z takimi renomowanymi wykonawcami, jak Secret Machines, The Dears, Kaiser Chiefs i The Raveonettes, a także podpisał kontrakt płytowy z wytwórnią V2. Drugi album - już tym razem pełnoobsadowego zespołu - dowodzi, że ubiegłoroczny „Amusement Parks On Fire" nie był dziełem przypadku, sensacją jednego krótkiego sezonu czy słomianym ogniem, by odwołać się do nazwy wymyślonej przez Feericka. Te parki rozrywki płonąć będą jeszcze długo żywym, jasnym ogniem.

What is it with modern bands and their fascination with the idea of good old end of the pier entertainment going up in flames? Arcade Fire was a nasty enough image for those of us raised on a diet of Derby Day and tupenny slot machines. Now, here’s Nottingham’s Amusement Parks On Fire to join in the conflagration. Who next? Burning Down The House Of Fun?

If you’re looking for a band to start a fire in your heart then these guys are anything but a perfect match. ‘Out Of The Angeles’ sets its stall out right from the opening title track with its six-and-a-half minute mix of sonic cathedral shapelessness and mid-paced Dave Grohl-inspired rock. Foo-gazing or Shoe Fighters - you can take your pick.

The likes of A Star Is Born and In Flight follow in much the same vein and at times you can’t help but think that you’d be hard-pressed to spot the difference if you put the album on random shuffle accidentally. There’s the odd moment of respite here and there, such as the nocturnal noodle of At Last The Night but only So Mote It Be brings any real pleasure. It appears to be the work of another band entirely, namely one featuring members of Rachel’s or Godspeed! You Black Emperor, with its complete change of tempo down to a somnambulant string-led crawl leaving you begging for them not to return to the predictable stodge of before. But sadly they do.

If Amusement Parks On Fire achieve one thing that many other bands would die for, it’s the way that they capture the experience of seeing a band live on this record. Sadly for them, and indeed us, this appears to be by making all the songs interminably longer than they need to be and mixing it so badly that the vocals are rendered almost completely inaudible. Stop arson around lads.
