Opis:
Znacie They Might Be Giants? Jest ich dwóch, są z Nowego Jorku i od drugiej połowy lat osiemdziesiątych należą do najbarwniejszych zjawisk na amerykańskiej scenie niezależnej. Flansburgh i Linnell mają na koncie kilka wysoko cenionych albumów, m.in. „Lincoln” z 1989. Mogą też być pamiętani za sprawą kilku numerów, które cieszyły się sporym powodzeniem kilkanaście lat temu dzięki zabawnym klipom. Sprawdźcie sami „Birdhouse In Your Soul” czy kapitalne „Ana Ng”.

Description:
As a lifelong fan of They Might Be Giants, I am invested in this band, both monetarily and emotionally. There is no escaping that fact. From the moment I first heard the band's eponymous debut in 1986, I knew that I had stumbled upon a rare treat. In the two decades since then, I have attended concerts, bought more records, and continued to listen in a mixture of awe and enjoyment.

What I noticed right away about The Else is that sonically, it has elements that are new to listeners of TMBG. The album was co-produced by The Dust Brothers, and their creative input has given the two Johns an edge that heretofore was an absent element on previous releases. The tracks that most easily show the creative addition of the Dust Brothers are "Take Out the Trash and "Upside Down Frown." The former is a sonic gem with a groovy bass line and the latter is a tune with an eclectic bass/drum rhythm that makes the tune almost danceable.

If I have a criticism of the new album it's this - the advanced listening copy that I received was flawed, so halfway through the song "Contrecoup", the CD cuts out. The next song on the album, Feign Amnesia" is totally unplayable. A quick trip to iTunes (where the album was released on May 15th) fixed that little problem for me, and I am glad because I don't know that I could have listened to the "advanced listening copy" until July (when the physical CD itself becomes available in stores) without hearing those songs.

Fortunately for me, the last track on the album, "The Mesopotamians" is intact. It is fortunate that the last track is there in its entirety because that song is easily my favorite on the new album. The song is a tale about a fictional band called "The Mesopotamians" and the exploits of the four members - Sargon, Hammurabi, Ashurbanipal, and Gilgamesh - on tour. Constructed in the same vein as the now-classic tune "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)", which was originally recorded by The Four Lads, the song is the one that most often earwigs itself into my head for hours at a time. Of course, any song that can successfully weave in the names of four famous Mesopotamians cannot be such a bad thing, can it?

Anyone looking to purchase The Else and hear soon-to-be classics in the same vein as "Birdhouse in Your Soul" or "Ana Ng" or "Boss of Me" will be disappointed. Those songs do not exist here. But those who buy the album based on this review will know a few things: 1. This album is as good as any that TMBG has released; 2. The Else is as quirky, both lyrically and musically, as any that TMBG has released; and 3. Regardless of what anyone else says, I love this album. But I am obviously biased.
