Premierę miała właśnie nowa płyta zespołu Marillion zatytułowana Somewhere Else. Jest ona już dziesiątym albumem studyjnym nagranym ze Stevem Hogarthem, a czternastym w całej karierze zespołu. Jeszcze przed premierą uznana została przez dziennikarzy za jedno z najlepszych dokonań grupy. Ze swoim doskonałym wyczuciem dramatyzmu łagodzonym przez melancholię muzycy stworzyli bogate i przemawiające do wyobraźni słuchacza muzyczne pejzaże. Dziesięć zamieszczonych na płycie kompozycji (The Other Half, See It Like A Baby, Thankyou Whoever You Are, Most Toys, Somewhere Else, A Voice From The Past, No Such Thing, The Wound, The Last Century For Man, Faith) to niezwykły dowód na twórcze możliwości zespołu, przejrzystość jego wizji oraz niezależność tworzących go muzyków. Jest prawdziwie unikatowym zjawiskiem to, że Marillion staje się coraz lepszy po niemal ćwierćwieczu swojego istnienia. Somewhere Else to album bardzo wyjątkowy i osobisty. Porusza tak poważne tematy, jak samotność, alienacja, miłość, relacje międzyludzkie, humanitaryzm. Tournee, które rozpocznie się 14 kwietnia w Gibraltarze, a zakończy 8 lipca w Turku obejmie ponad 40 koncertów, a zespół odwiedzi Portugalię, Hiszpanię, Francję, Włochy, Holandię, Niemcy, Czechy, Polskę, Węgry, Słowację, Wielką Brytanię, Norwegię i Finlandię. As a longtime fan of Marillion, I got the album aa soon as I could (a couple of days prior to it's official release) and it's been on my IPod getting a thorough grilling. As with a lot of Marillion albums, the first listen failed to make an instant connection with me. THIS IS A GOOD SIGN THOUGH. Holidays In Eden made a great first impression (it's very commercial) but has failed to stand the test of time as a true marillion classic. Brave on the other hand took ages to grab me; in fact we were on to Strange Engine before I finally got into BRAVE. But Brave is unstoppable once it's got you. This album could be the same.
I dissagree with King-Bingo that Most Toys is a "horror" , actually it's quite good apart from the fact that it seems to have no beginning. It starts in the middle (the first word is BUT) and so it appears to be a song based on a chorus. It would perhaps have been a better choice for the single than See It Like A Baby, if it had an intro and first verse. That said, the rest of the album has some great tracks that really carry the listener away into our familiar Marillo-world. The album contains some unusual and almost experimental sounds which gave Anoraknophobia is's tremendous appeal, such as the "underwater" vocal on No Such Thing; carried by Rothery's straight and direct riff complemented by an almost sine-wave keyboard sound which lifts the listener into a dreamy and relaxed state. The next track, The Wound, harks back to previous albums with its opening guitar riff sounding a little like the riff in Season's End; while the opening vocal conjours up memories of Accidental Man in it's approach but not in it's content. It's a great fusion which makes for a great track. The album finishes with FAITH, which was written a while ago and fans have been waiting for it to be put onto an album. It's found it's place here. As an end piece, it's a touch of genius. it ends the album on a great note, and really gives the listener something to think about.
I agree with Giles (above) that the album deserves a 7 out of 10 because 10 would be perfect and having no beggining to Most-Toys prevents that. It's pulled down a further point in my mind by not having any great 15 minute epics for the listener to get their teeth into and another point by Marbles and Anoraknophobia because they are so damn hard to beat. Although it's scores way above the middle-ground because it's so much better than most of the albums currently on offer by "lesser" bands. Actually, I'm convinced that this album is a grower and will get better with a few more plays so I'll give it 8. A great score for a great album.
