W 480 roku przed naszą erą licząca 7 tysięcy żołnierzy armia grecka stawiła w przesmyku Termopile czoła 100-tysięcznej armii perskiej pod wodzą króla Kserksesa. Mimo tak wielkiej przewagi Persom przez kilka dni nie udawało się przełamać greckiej obrony. Losy bitwy przechyliły się na korzyść najeźdźców dopiero po tym, jak zdrajca Efialtes z Malis pokazał im drogę umożliwiającą okrążenie greckich sił. Świadomi klęski żołnierze zdecydowali się na odwrót. Na polu bitwy pozostali tylko Spartanie - 300-osobowy oddział dowodzony przez króla Leonidasa. Wiedzieli, że nie mają szans na zwycięstwo, ale wystarczająco długie związanie armii perskiej w walce pozwoliło Grekom zreorganizować obronę i stawić czoła siłom Kserksesa w bitwie pod Salaminą.

Plot Summary:
Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Es ist das letzte Aufgebot: 300 loyale Elite-Kämpfer stehen König Leonidas (Gerard Butler) von Sparta bei, als er 480 vor Christus in den Krieg zieht. Geradezu lebensmüde mutet sein Versuch an, sich dem in die Hunderttausende gehenden Heer von Perserkönig Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) entgegenzustellen, der in Griechenland eingefallen ist und das Land unterjocht. Leonidas beabsichtigt das Abendland in der Enge der Thermopylen verteidigen zu können. Zunächst stellen sich tatsächlich Erfolge ein - bis Verrat und Neid den Plan torpedieren.
