Urodziła się w Belgii, wśród swoich przodków ma Marokańczyków, Egipcjan, Palestyńczyków. Niegdyś w nocnych klubach Brukseli tańczyła raks sharqi - prawdziwy taniec brzucha, a o jej temperamencie krążą plotki jakoby miała podchodzić do przyjaciół z nożem. Natacha Atlas debiutowała późno, bo w wieku 31 lat solową płytą "Diaspora" (1995). Do tej pory zdążyła wydać w sumie 5 albumów i kolekcję remiksów. Jej muzyka to fuzja orientalnej magii i sensualizmu z nowoczesnymi brzmieniami, miks Wschodu z Zachodem, z którego zwycięsko wychodzi ... Natacha! Atlas potrafi umiejętnie eliminować z world music elementy folklorystycznej stęchlizny i kiczu, choć jej charakterystyczna orientalna maniera wokalna jest słyszalna nawet w tak klasycznych utworach jak "A Put A Spell On You". Śpiewa po arabsku, angielsku i francusku, a urokliwie tajemnicze teksty piosenek w tej pierwszej wersji językowej wcale nie brzmią tak wyrafinowanie, jakby mogło się wydawać. Oprócz muzyki Bliskiego Wschodu twórczość Natachy czerpie z popu, dance, rapu, drum’n’bass, r’n’b, hinduskiego popu i francuskiego chanson. Pomysł płyty z gatunku "the best of" wydaję się być usprawiedliwiony - 10 lat kariery, 5 wydawnictw, ostatnie ( "Something Dangerous" ) sprzed 2 lat, więc najwyższy czas, żeby o sobie przypomnieć. Jednak, patrząc na zawartość krążka, nasuwa się przypuszczenie, że pani Atlas zabrakło hitów na kompilację "the greatest hits", skoro raczy nas aż 3 wersjami jednej piosenki i 3 coverami. Część pozostałych utworów jest w zremiksowanych wersjach - duży plus za "Yallah Chant (2005 edit)" – i wygląda jak przymiarka do składanki, ale remiksów, a te już mieliśmy w 2000 roku. Natacha Atlas was born in Belgium, but is of Middle Eastern descent, with ancestral and family links to Egypt, Palestine and Morocco. Her early childhood was spent among the North African community of Brussels, absorbing Arabic music and Hindi movies. After teenage years in England, she moved back to Belgium, where she worked in Middle Eastern nightclubs and restaurants, singing mawaals and belly-dancing, and even performed with a Belgian salsa band for a short time. Returning to England, Natacha met Transglobal Underground – the London-based multi-cultural collective who, in blending electronica, dub, hip hop and funk with Indian, African and Middle Eastern musical forms, were significant role models for today's world-dance phenomenon. The encounter was to turn into a long-standing and happy association. First guesting with them in 1991, she became a member of the core quartet of Transglobal in 1993, performing as lead singer and belly-dancer (the latter not some kind of limp tourist-pleasing wiggle but the real raq sharki). Natacha released her first solo album in 1995. Diaspora combined the dubby, beat driven global dance approach of Transglobal Underground with the more traditional work of Arabic musicians such as Tunisian singer-songwriter Walid Rouissi and Natacha's uncle, Egyptian composer and oud master Essam Rashad. Halim followed in 1997. Recorded in London and Cairo, with UK and Egyptian musicians including Essam Rashad's Arabic orchestra, its title is a tribute to Abdel Halim Hafez, one of the all-time best loved of Egyptian singers. Gedida, released in 1999, was again recorded in Egypt and the UK. The naturalness of Atlas and her team's meeting between Middle Eastern and European delighted an ever-increasing audience in both territories and her version (sung in French) of the Françoise Hardy number Mon Amie La Rose became a top ten hit in France. 2000 saw the release of The Remix Collection, in which material from the first three albums was given the treatment by a variety of remixers, including Talvin Singh, Banco de Gaia, Youth and the Transglobals. Natacha spent much of that year in Egypt, and that's where Ayeshteni (2001) was recorded. It bears, as its only English-language song, a particularly splendid example of how this woman can take on a classic and cast new light and excitement on it - a mighty rendering of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put A Spell On You. 2002's album, The Natacha Atlas & Marc Eagleton Project's Foretold In The Language Of Dreams, was a considerable departure. No beats, just a calm, shimmering heat-haze of an album reflecting the philosophical and poetic heart of Arabic music, Sufi sayings, the works of Brazilian writer Paolo Coelho and the teachings of Gurdjieff. With 2003’s Something Dangerous Natacha zipped Middle Eastern music straight to the heart of UK pop, combining dance music, rap, drum‘n’bass, R&B, Hindi pop, film music and French chanson. The Best Of Natacha Atlas features 16 tracks – some of them favourites from the albums Diaspora, Gedida, Sopmething Dangerous, Ayeshanti and Halim. Others tracks have only been previously released as singles while there is also a handful of 2005 edits and remixes.
