Cemetery of Scream kojarzyło mi się dotąd z klimatami doom/death metalowymi, bowiem znałem je z pojedynczych utworów poupychanych na różnych składankach. Ich muzyka jawi mi się z nich, jako poprawnie zagrana i miła uchu, bez jakichkolwiek wszakże rewelacji.

Tymczasem razem z Prelude to a Sentimental Journey spotkała mnie niemała niespodzianka. Stylistycznie zespół nie odbiegł daleko od swych korzeni - nadal jest to doom metal, tylko w nieco złagodzonej, jeszcze bardziej melodyjnej formie. Muzyka nabrała jeszcze więcej cech symfonicznych wzbogacających i tak doskonale budowany klimat. Dodatkowym atutem jest tu na pewno mnogość wpływów orientalnych, raczej nie spotykanych nie tylko w muzyce polskich wykonawców, ale i w obrębie tego gatunku w ogóle. Efekt jest łatwo zauważalny, bowiem nastrój tajemniczości i egzotyki otacza odbiorcę już od pierwszych dźwięków.

Również konstrukcja płyty zasługuje na uwagę, ponieważ i ona, w połączeniu ze wspomnianymi elementami, wiele stanowi o całości. Album jest w pewnym sensie podzieloną na trzy akty historią; poszczególne utwory łączą ze sobą nie tylko wspólne wątki opowiadanej historii, ale i krótkie prologi/epilogi. Koncept niby nie nowy, ale efekt jednak niezły. Muzycznie jest ciekawie, choć Prelude to a Sentimental Journey nie jest albumem szczególnie łatwym w odbiorze. Wymaga on jednak od słuchacza nieco uwagi, żeby dostrzec wszystkie motywy i smaczki, których na krążku jest niemało. Odnajdziemy w muzyce COS oprócz growlingu kilka rodzajów wokali, od melodeklamacji, po śpiew czystym głosem, ciekawe melodie wygrywane na gitarach i partie klawiszowe, które bynajmniej nie powodują uczucia słodkości i przesytu, jak ma to, niestety, nader często miejsce w metalu. Wszystko bardzo zgrabnie zagrane i dozowane z wyczuciem, bez przesadnej rozrzutności. Efektem tego jest płyta przemyślana i dojrzała. Szkoda tylko, że będąca dopiero trzecim pełnym albumem w dorobku mającego już przecież 12 lat Cemetery Of Scream.

I think that I still have their second album "Deepression" somewhere. As far as I know, Gothic Doom with some Death Metal-influences Nothing special. Now the third album "Prelude To A Sentimental Journey" rotates in my player and as far as I know not much has changed. Still pretty varied Gothic Metal with not too much heaviness (although there are a few heavier, faster eruptions), but more atmosphere and also keyboards. Vocally they also still use both clear and deathy vocals.

But something has changed, the quality, imo to the better. One of the reasons already is featured in the intro, oriental melodies and elements. OK, I wouldn't really have imagined those from a Polish band and if I think about it, this combination is a little strange (well, maybe because they are with a Turkish label now), but without a doubt they manage to give the music a very own and interesting touch, not least because these melodies also re-appear throughout the album.

Within the songs CEMETERY OF SCREAM alternate between spheric keyboards, soft acoustic guitars and here and there also some double-bass-driven Death Metal-attack, always emphasizing melody and atmosphere, but by the heavier and faster elements they forestall boredom, one of the major flaws of many acts of this genre. Highlights are "Haila" with its many oriental elements or the heavier "Colder Than Ever", where the guitars and drums really thunder out of the cabinets.

With a good cover "Prelude To A Sentimental Journey" differs mainly by the oriental elements, we still cannot count COS among the genre-leaders, but still, you get good quality, albeit (apart from that) no really outstanding or surprising things.
