Ogromny sukces "Dirt" pociągnął za sobą trasę promocyjną, która okazała się tak udana, że potem nastąpiła powtórka i to kilka razy z rzędu. W sumie grupa spędziła w drodze ponad półtora roku. Pierwszą ofiarą takiego trybu życia padł basista Mike Starr, który pożegnał się z kolegami. Jego zastępcą został Mike Inez, znany z zespołu Ozzy'ego Osbourne'a. W trasie koncertowej powstawała także kolejna płytka Alicji z 1994 roku - "Jar Of Flies", która okazała się kompletnym zaskoczeniem dla fanów i dziennikarzy. Zaskoczeniem na plus. I jeżeli nawet ten słój był pełen much, to nigdy nie brzęczały one tak spokojnie. Grupa kojarzona dotychczas z raczej z ciężkim, niepokojącym brzmieniem, na tym albumie pokazała się z bardziej lirycznej, subtelnej i akustycznej strony. "Jar Of Flies" miał zaledwie 7 piosenek, które nagrane zostały zaledwie w 7 dni, z gościnnym udziałem orkiestry smyczkowej. Jednak jaśniejszym melodiom dalej towarzyszyły pełne desperacji, aczkolwiek momentami bardzo poetyckie teksty. Znajdziemy tutaj takie perełki jak akustyczny, delikatny "Nutshell" z pięknym tekstem, zadziorny "Swing On This", instrumentalny "Whale & Wasp" i nieco folkowy "Don't Follow" oraz mnóstwo brzmieniowych smaczków, a to gitarowe wstawki, a to wtrąci się harmonijka, a to wokalnie Layne uderzy w niespotykanie ciepłe tony. To taka płyta, przy której chce się odetchnąć pełną piersią, a na twarzy pojawia się uśmiech. Nawet kiedy wiadomo było, że bumerangiem wróciła do Staley'a jego stara znajoma - heroina. Nie było dla nikogo tajemnicą, że w tym czasie Layne Staley ponownie zaczął brać heroinę i jak pokaże później historia, kolejny odwyk nie przyniesie skutku.

Written and recorded in about a week, Jar of Flies solidified Alice in Chains' somewhat bizarre pattern of alternating full-length hard rock albums with mostly acoustic, ballad-oriented EPs. That quirk aside, Jar of Flies is a low-key stunner, achingly gorgeous and harrowingly sorrowful all at once. In a way, it's a logical sequel to Dirt -- despite the veneer of calm, the songs' voices still blame only themselves. But where Dirt found catharsis in its unrelenting darkness and depravity, Jar of Flies is about living with the consequences, full of deeply felt reflections on loneliness, self-imposed isolation, and lost human connections. The mood is still hopelessly bleak, but the poignant, introspective tone produces a sense of acceptance that's actually soothing, in a funereal sort of way. Jerry Cantrell's arrangements keep growing more detailed and layered; while there are a few noisy moments, most of Jar of Flies is bathed in a clean, shimmering ambience whose source is difficult to pin down, but is well served by Cantrell's varied guitar tones and even occasional string arrangements. And coming on the heels of Dirt, the restraint and subtlety of Jar of Flies are nothing short of revelatory -- though it was written and recorded in about a week, it feels much more crafted and textured than Sap. Perhaps Jar of Flies would have gotten more credit if it had been a full-length album; as it stands, the EP is a leap forward and a major work in the Alice in Chains catalog.
