USS GAMBIER BAY was the 19th CASABLANCA - class escort carrier and the first ship in the Navy to bear the name. USS GAMBIER BAY was lost during the Battle of Samar with the majority of her nearly 800 survivors rescued. The GAMBIER BAY was stricken from the Navy list on November 27, 1944.
