Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period of time. There are three main types of diabetes; (1) Type 1 diabetes is where the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin due to loss of beta cells (caused by autoimmune response). (2) Type 2 diabetes (adult-onset diabetes) is casued by insulin resistance, cells fail to respond to insulin. A lack of insulin may also develop. (3) Gestational diabetes is when pregnant women develop high blood sugar levels.
