Grupa powstała w 1994. Grupa przez ponad dwa lata mieszkała razem i wspólnie opracowywała układy taneczne, śpiew i pisała piosenki. Ich pierwszy singel ukazał się w lipcu 1996 i w szybkim tempie podbił listy przebojów w ponad 50 krajach. Grupa po wydaniu swojego drugiego krążka w listopadzie 1997 miała już na koncie 6 piosenek numer jeden w Wielkiej Brytanii. I tym samym album, który pokrył się dziesięciokrotną platyną. Drugi album osiągnął sukces o połowę mniejszy, jednak grupą wciąż była numer jeden spośród girlsbandów. Najbardziej pamiętny moment 1998 to odejście Geri Halliwell ze Spice Girls. Ginger Spice opuściła grupę z wciąż niewiadomego powodu. Po jej odejściu dziewczyny ruszyły w trasę koncertową i wydały singiel "Viva Forever" (piosenka pochodzi z albumu "Spiceworld" nagranego z "byłą Spice Girl" Geri) do którego powstał animowany teledysk, w którym zamiast Spicetek wystapiły chińskie lalki o ich podobiznach. W grudniu tego samego roku już kwartet tworzony przez Emmę Bunton, Melanię Brown, Melanię Chisholm i Victorię Beckham wydał pożegnalny singiel "Goodbye" (9 #1 w Wielkiej Brytanii). Jednak w listopadzie 2000 powróciły z nowym albumem "Forever", niestety płyta była źle promowana i nie odniosła "oczekiwanego" sukcesy, ale sprzedała się w ilośći ponad 6 milionów kopii. Na początku 2001 grupa zawiesiła swoją działalność z inicjatywy Melanie Chisholm, która pragnęła zająć się swoją solową karierą.

The Spice Girls, as well as their managers and songwriters, are nothing if not clever, and Spiceworld, the group's second album, illustrates exactly how sharp they are. Conventional wisdom dictates that Spiceworld should be a weak facsimile of Spice, which itself featured a handful of great singles surrounded by filler. Conventional wisdom, in this case, is wrong -- Spiceworld is a better record than its predecessor, boasting a more consistent (and catchier) set of songs and an intoxicating sense of fun. Instead of merely rewriting Spice, Spiceworld consolidates and expands the group's style, adding Latin flourishes ("Spice Up Your Life"), kitschy blues ("The Lady Is a Vamp"), and stomping, neo-Motown blue-eyed soul in the vein of Culture Club ("Stop"). The girls -- Mel C. in particular -- are actually turning into good vocalists, and each song plays to their strengths, giving each Spice a chance to shine. Best of all, each song has a strong melody and a strong, solid beat, whether it's a ballad or a dance number.
