Japończyk Hideaki Ishii, bardziej znany jako DJ Krush, od niemal 10 lat specjalizuje się w eksperymentalnym, bardzo ascetycznym hip hopie (często napiętnowanym podskórnymi jazzowymi wibracjami), kiedyś niesłusznie określanym mianem trip hopu. Jego ostanie, bardzo minimalistyczne dokonania („Milight”, Ki-Oku”) zazwyczaj rozczarowywały wszystkich tych, którzy na Japończyka zwrócili uwagę dzięki modzie na nieco smutne, upalone bristolskie brzmienia oraz łączeniu brzmień trąbki czy saksofonu z ulicznymi beatami.
Najnowszy album Krusha powinien spodobać się zarówno wielbicielom poszukujących progresywnych dźwięków i klimatów, jak i bardziej wyrobionym konsumentom „pozytywnych wibracji”. Ishii raz jeszcze szkielet rytmiczny „-Zen-„ zamknął w powolnych, powściągliwych i surowych hiphopowych beatach, całość jednak natchnął niezwykle sugestywną, poruszającą, wręcz medytacyjną atmosferą, nie zakłócaną, a czasami wręcz potęgowaną, soulowymi wokalami, regularnymi rymami i natchnionymi opowieściami zaproszonych gości (Zap Mama, N’Dea Davenport, Company Flow, Black Thought z The Roots, Kukoo Da Baga Bonez, Sunja Lee) oraz muzyczną pomocą Tunde Ayanyemi czy Ahmira Thompsona, na co dzień producenta m.in. D’Angelo.
To uliczno-nowoczesne Zen wg Krusha - obok „Strictly Turntablized” - jest zdecydowanie najlepszą, najpełniejszą i najciekawszą wypowiedzią Japończyka, który wreszcie zrezygnował z nieco nudnawych popisów składania beatów na rzecz muzyki. Bardzo dobrej muzyki.

Following up on his masterpiece studio album Kakusei, and mix album CODE4109, DJ Krush is back with his much-anticipated 6th studio album entitled ZEN. Spending over 6 months for recording in Tokyo, NY, LA and Philadelphia, Krush wanted to express the changing atmosphere and tides towards the new millennium in various forms of sound. Featured guests include: Zap Mama whose over-dubbed soul-healing voice stunned Krush in studio, MC Black Thought and drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson from The Roots, Nigerian percussion genius Tunde Ayanyemi , and Company Flow which recently announced that they are breaking up. The track on this album is one of Company Flow's last recordings. Kazufumi Kodama who met Krush for the first time 6 years ago in studio since their collaboration on a track called "On The Dub-blue" from Krush's first album. For Zen, Japanese producer/mixer DJ Krush works his way into a vision of sublime, downbeat hip-hop that's a snug fit with the title. The opening "Song 1" is an irresistible slice of trance-state trip-hop, with the cascading notes of a vibraphone and flute perfectly complementing the atmospheric grooves. Krush also continues the collaborational bent of previous LPs, with hip-hop heads Black Thought and ?uestlove from the Roots (appearing on separate tracks), Company Flow, and DJ Disk alongside left-field choices Zap Mama, N'Dea Davenport, and trumpeter Kazufumi Kodama. On these tracks, the beats and effects are more pointed than on the opener and, as in the past, DJ Krush proves he's a stellar jack-of-all-trades trackmaster. The tuneless bassline and production gloom surrounding "Vision of Art" are the perfect bedrock for hardcore paranoiacs Company Flow, while the frenetic, quasi-jungle programming on "Sonic Traveler" only highlights the incredible flair of guest Tunde Ayanyemi (on kudi and bata drums). And while any other hip-hop producer would burn out on at least a few collaborations, Krush just keeps turning out excellent song beds: for DJ Disk on "Duck Chase," for Zap Mama on "Danger of Love," and for Kazufumi Kodama on "Day's End." All these great appearances make any disappointment caused by the lack of solo jaunts after "Song 1" practically nil.
