25 lecie Solidarności jest nie tylko ważne dla Gdańska, ale dla całej Europy i świata. Dlatego dla mnie najważniejsze jest aby dać jak najlepszy koncert - wyznał główny bohater największego od 25 lat zamieszania w Gdańsku - Jean Michel Jarre.

Po ponad półrocznych rozmowach, uzgodnieniach, a nawet po zerwaniu kontraktu to co było w sferze marzeń w końcu się realizuje. W piątek wieczorem rozpocznie się największy koncert w historii Gdańska.

Artysta skomponował specjalnie na uczczenie jubileuszu "Solidarności" "Suitę Gdańską", a zajęło mu to zaledwie cztery tygodnie. Utwór składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej usłyszymy utwory dedykowane "Solidarności" i Lechowi Wałęsie. Jarre wykorzystał w nich elementy "Murów" Jacka Kaczmarskiego oraz utwory Chopina, którego jest wielkim fanem. Druga część będzie poświęcona ojcu świętemu Janowi Pawłowi II.

Artyście towarzyszyć będą polscy muzycy: 50-osobowa Orkiestra Filharmonii Bałtyckiej pod dyr. Michała Nesterowicza oraz 30-osobowy Akademicki Chór Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego. Poza nimi Jarre`a wspomagać będą trzej francuscy muzycy.

Koncert będzie poprzedzony (o godz. 19) Rodzinnym Zdjęciem Polaków. Organizatorzy liczą, że do pozujących dołączą prezydent Lech Wałęsa, prezydent Gdańska Paweł Adamowicz i oczywiście Jean-Michel Jarre. Na koncert zostało zaproszonych ponad tysiąc VIP-ów. (wirtualny.gdansk.p)

More than 100,000 people turned out for a concert by French electronic music composer
Jean-Michel Jarre to mark the 25th anniversary of Poland's Solidarity trade union which helped bring down communism.

The televised concert, with laser images and fireworks, was held at the naval shipyards in the northern town of Gdansk where Lech Walesa's Solidarnosc, the first free trade union in the Soviet bloc, was born in August 1980.

Before an enthusiastic crowd massed amidst the shipyards' immense cranes, Jarre played his old songs including the Oxygene and Equinoxe suites and talked with the audience in a mixture of English and Polish for over two hours.

"This concert is dedicated to these shipyards where everything started," he said. "If we are here today, it's thanks to those workers at the naval shipyards. It's thanks to their courage that one of the greatest mistakes of the 20th century was ended: Soviet communism."

Jarre played a special work written for the occasion, "Solidarity Tonight", and invited Walesa onto the stage for a huge ovation.

"Our generation gave Europe an opportunity for freedom and justice," the former Solidarity leader declared, before adding bitterly: "There were 15,000 of us at the time, while today there are only 3,000 workers at the naval shipyards. Liberty turned out difficult for them." (yahoo.com)
