Crysis 2 to pierwszoosobowa strzelanina, w której ponownie przywdziewamy dający nadludzkie możliwości nanoskafander, by stanąć przeciwko hordom obcych najeźdźców. Stawką w tym starciu jest przyszłość naszej planety.
Akcja gry zaczyna się trzy lata po wydarzeniach, których świadkami byliśmy w pierwszej części. Przez ten czas obcy zadbali, by znaczna część naszej planety przeobraziła się w pole bitewne. Największe miasta świata, takie jak Rio de Janeiro, Londyn czy Tokio, stały się wyludnionymi ruinami, których ulicami władają sondy obcych, a niebo nad nimi patrolują masywne statki kosmiczne. Gracz zostaje rzucony w samo serce zrujnowanego Nowego Jorku, gdzie musi stawić czoło nie tylko potworom z innej planety, ale również wrogo nastawionym żołnierzom Crynet Ops Infantry.
Tym razem twórcy znacznie większy nacisk położyli na fabułę. Jej przebieg śledzimy nie tylko dzięki scenkom przerywnikowym, ale również poprzez konwersacje między postaciami oraz skanowanie zwłok. Ponadto w odsłanianiu sekretów scenariusza pomagają porzucone nagrania audio, na które regularnie natykamy się przemierzając zrujnowane dzielnice.
Crysis 2 od innych gier FPS odróżnia duża swoboda działania. W czasie zabawy przemierzamy duże nieliniowe lokacje, które powalają na zastosowanie wielu różnorodnych taktyk.
W porównaniu z pierwszą częścią spore zmiany zaszły w sposobie funkcjonowania nanoskafandra. Tym razem sposób jego działania jest nieco inny, do wyboru mamy dwa główne tryby: stealth (niewidzialność) i armor (podkręcenie statystyk). Każdy z nich możemy modyfikować, nakładając na niego dwa pomniejsze tryby dodatkowe. Oznacza to, że w każdym momencie nasza postać definiowana jest przez trzy wybrane przez nas modyfikatory. Kombinezon możemy regularnie usprawniać, zwiększając jego skuteczność poprzez dodatkowe moduły.
Crysis 2 korzysta z nowoczesnej technologii CryEngine 3, która gwarantuje wspaniałą grafikę i sprawia, że gra bez problemu radzi sobie z wyświetlaniem olbrzymich poziomów. Ważnym dodatkiem do rozgrywki jednoosobowej jest rozbudowany tryb multiplayer, przygotowany przez brytyjski oddział firmy Crytek. W produkcji zawarto wiele form potyczek drużynowych i zróżnicowane mapy. Każdy z uczestników walk zdobywa punkty doświadczenia, za które można odblokować nowe bronie i modyfikatory nanokombinezonu. Dobierając różne zestawy uzbrojenia i sprzętu tworzymy unikalną klasę postaci.

The world has been ravaged by a series of climatic disasters and society is on the verge of total breakdown.
