Ptolus to najnowsze dziecko Monte Cooka - jednego z twórców 3. edycji Dungeons & Dragons (i 3.5 też). Jest to setting fantasy, będący w istocie jednym miastem, opisanym na 672 stronach opasłego podręcznika.
Mimo, iż Ptolus to tylko jedno miasto, nie jest zawieszone w próżni. Leży na prowincji powstałego wieki temu, wielkiego Imperium Tharsis jednego z największych państw, jakie kiedykolwiek istniały na powierzchni planety Praemal. Imperium formalnie nadal kontroluje cały kontynent, lecz w praktyce chwieje się w posadach, szarpane najazdami barbarzyńców, rozdarte pomiędzy trzy osoby mieniące się jego Imperatorami.
Ptolus jest typowym settingiem fantasy. Do dyspozycji graczom dano zatem standardowe rasy, znane z D&D. Można grać ludźmi, trzema rodzajami elfów, dwoma rodzajami krasnoludów, gnomami, niziołkami, półelfami i półorkami. Poza tym gracze mogą zagrać także centaurami, humanoidalnymi lwami, zwanymi litorianami oraz jaszczuroludźmi.
Na Praemal żyje jednak o wiele więcej ras, w tym znane z D&D diablęta i aasimary, którymi z nieznanych przyczyn grać jednak nie można.
Postacie graczy mogą pochodzić z Ptolus lub z innej części świata. Jednak nawet kiedy są przybyszami z daleka, posiadają, rzecz jasna, pewne podstawowe informacje o świecie w którym żyją i mieście, do którego przybyli. Informacje te zebrano w A Player’s Guide to Ptolus - nie jest zatem konieczne, by MP robił graczom wykład na temat świata i jego historii. Wystarczy zadać im lekturę obowiązkową w postaci tego 34-stronicowego podręcznika.
