Co się dzieje z wielkimi głosami? Z divami, z którymi ryczałam (marnie imitując ich śpiew) przed lustrem do dezodorantu udającego mikrofon? Weźmy taką Celine Dion - jak prawdziwa fabryczna robotnica - wydaje co roku coś nowego co już od lat nie trzyma się kupy ... a może właśnie tego ma się trzymać?
Albo Whitney Houston, o której głos chciałam kiedyś poprosić złotą rybkę. Od dawna od tworzenia woli kokainowe zabawy. Pomijam w wyliczance Mariah Carey, bo jej pojękiwania jak i brwi nigdy nie trawiłam.
Z tego wynikałoby, że trzeba postawić kreskę na dotychczasowych dokonaniach "pań - wyjek" i pielęgnować ich stare albumy jak relikwie świętych.

Jednak zupełnie przypadkowo w stacji radiowej usłyszałam singiel "Ain't No Other Man" - prosty motyw muzyczny, mocny wokal ... wow ... jaki świetny kawałek. Bardzo się zszokowałam, bo okazało się że to utwór Christiny Aguilery. Do tej pory przyglądałam się z lekkim pokpiwaniem na jej stroje, erotyczne teledyski i dość słabawe piosenki. A tu nareszcie coś dobrego. Nie zawiodłam się po przesłuchaniu całego dwupłytowego albumu "Back To Basics". Szczególnie pierwsza płyta miło koi zmysły od początkowych taktów "Makes Me Wanna Pray", przez anielsko spokojny "Oh Mother", po "Here To Stay". To co tu znajdziecie to esencja soulu i r'n'b czyli powrotu do NORMALNEGO śpiewania.

Druga płyta jest utrzymana w nieco innym stylu. Tu zaangażowana została orkiestra, kwartet smyczkowy, sekcja dęta a także chór. Jak za dotknięciem czarodziejskiej różdżki przenosimy się do zadymionego, jazzowego baru gdzie na scenie występuje młoda blond artystka. Występ zaczyna się od wstępu ("Enter The Circus"), który łagodnie przechodzi w pierwszy pokaz umiejętności Christiny w nieco pompatycznym "Welcome". Później następuje wesoły, rewiowy "Candyman" i jazzująco - bluesowy "Nasty Noughty Boy".

A więc jest! Głos, talent i świeżość. Chciałabym powiedzieć, że teraźniejsza diva ale to określenie kojarzy mi się bardziej z operą i starszą kobietą, którą 26 -letnia Aguilera nie jest. Christina udowodniła tym wszystkim, którzy jak ja myśleli, że mają do czynienia z plastikową lalą, że potrafi śpiewać i nie boi się sięgać do korzeni.
Tę płytę warto mieć!

Its usually not a good sign when an artist delivers a two-disc record. Christina Aguilera's new record Back to Basics shows an adventurous ambition to produce two albums with different sounds but a common thematic arc. Though both discs have some excellent tracks, this could have been one amazing album instead of just two solid ones with some judicious editing. What you will find though, is great samples, huge hooks, and a fresh sound incorporating both old and new into a cohesive whole.

Disc One, produced by the impressive DJ Premier, is laden with great samples and entangling hooks. "Intro(Back to Basics)" is a funk filled preamble paying homage to "the soulsingers...jazzmakers and groundbreakers...who paved the way." Christina wastes no time in showing her vocal range on the piano and gospel choir driven track "Makes Me Wanna Pray." The excellent "Back in the Day" has a great retro sound and namechecks Coltrane and the "originators and innovators who...remain my inspiration every day." The trumpets bust out on the energetic, rhythmic "Ain't No Other Man," while "Slow Down Baby" is a sultry brush-off of a potential suitor, "You never gonna get it from me, because I'm with someone." "Oh Mother" is the most modern song on Disc One, lacing an elegant, emotional vocal on the abuse she and her mother suffered over a simple drum track. "Still Dirrty" is a mash of great samples with Christina's assurance that under the Jean Harlow glam she is still a freak. "Thank You(Dedication to Fans)" is a ode to the audience that, while very sweet, is an unnecessary addition.

Disc Two has a very different sound thanks to the tonal discord of the intro track, "Enter the Circus." The synth-heavy "Welcome" is a dark track that doesn't quite mesh with its upbeat lyrics. "Candyman" jumps with life from its opening bars, with a fun swing sound and layered harmonies. Sounding as if they came straight off a 40-year old vinyl disc, the delightfully risque "Nasty Naughty Boy," which takes sexual innuendo to a new level, and the soft and seductive "I Got Trouble" make for a great pairing. "Hurt" is a typical Christina ballad, and a likely huge hit, but one whose tone and sound are out of place on this record. The passionate "Mercy on Me" is a great stand alone track that sounds more 60s than jazz, and the sparse acoustic guitar of "Save Me From Myself" is a nice change of pace, but the keyboard-dominated "The Right Man" closes with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang. Linda Perry has co-written and produced some amazing tracks in her career, but that success leads her to veer wildly from sound to sound in search of a big single. Perry's ADD method of producing delivers three great tracks, but it's extremely ironic that DJ Premier's disc has an overall more cohesive sound with more commercial potential than Perry's.

This is a lot of music to absorb, and despite some tracks better suited to earlier albums or the recycle bin, this is one impressive collection of songs. Aguilera has an ability to reinvent herself from disc to disc, maintaining a freshness few artists have been able to retain. Her voice is as dominating as always, but she is smart enough to tone it down where necessary. Some track editing could have been used here, but there is more than enough to entertain, and fans will be able to mix and match their favorites into one amazing album. Recommended.

Oft lässt sich gar nicht so genau festmachen, woran es letztendlich liegt, wenn man mit einer Platte nicht warm werden will. Kleinigkeiten, die nicht stimmen, ein kaum wahrnehmbarer, unterschwelliger Misston, der das Klangbild stört. "Back To Basics" gehört in diese Kategorie. Überaus appetitlich wird ein Menü angerichtet, dem dann - wie enttäuschend! - jeglicher Nachgeschmack abgeht.

Woran liegt's? Sicher nicht an den handwerklich einwandfreien und auf immensem musikgeschichtlichen Wissen und präzisen Gespür basierenden Instrumentals eines DJ Premier. Bestimmt auch nicht an der unter tätiger Mithilfe Steve Winwoods entstandenen gospeligen "Makes Me Wanna Pray" oder dem raffinierten Rhythmuswechsel in "Understand". Es liegt nicht an den funky Bläserarrangements, nicht am 70er-Motown-Sound, nicht an den Bässen und unter Garantie nicht an der Sängerin, dass der Gesamteindruck derart fad gerät. Die Zutaten sind exzellent, doch: Maître! Es fehlt das Salz!

Der Eindruck, dessen ich mich nicht erwehren kann: Beim Versuch, der Stimme reichlich Raum zu geben, wurde die Verbindung zu einem Ganzen vernachlässigt. Die einzelnen Spuren - Gesang, Bläser, der Beat - scheinen nahezu verbindungslos nebeneinander her zu laufen, Zweidimensionalität ist die Folge. Christina Aguilera erweckt stets den Eindruck, sie sei zu viel mehr in der Lage, komme aber nicht in Fahrt. Zudem langweilt mich die immer gleiche R'n'B-Attitüde erheblich.

Knapp die Hälfte geschafft. Fans vom Band lobhudeln sich durch "Thank You". Was Dicke-Hose-Gebaren betrifft, darf sich hier so mancher Hip Hop-Künstler eine Scheibe abschneiden: Feature dich selbst wie die Hölle in Reinkultur! Ich stelle fest: Ich habe keine Lust mehr.

Und jetzt vergessen wir all das. "Back To Basics" hätte leichtes Spiel mit mir gehabt, hätte die zweite CD des Doppelalbums am Anfang gestanden. Hinter dem Zusatz "Oldschool" versteckt sich ein Nachschlag, der die Beschwerlichkeiten der ersten Hälfte ver- und den Kritiker erblassen lässt.

Sämtlich von Linda Perry produziert, kitzeln die neun nachgelegten Tracks alles aus Christina Aguilera heraus, das bisher partout nicht zum Vorschein kommen wollte. Die zweite Scheibe wurde einzig und allein für den Lieblingsplattenschrank geschaffen. Eine Ahnung davon stand immer im Raum, jetzt erbringt Mrs. Dirrty den Beweis: Sie kann wirklich und wahrhaftig einfach alles singen.

Willkommen geheißen von farbenfrohen Jahrmarkt-Klängen inklusive Chören und Hammondorgel betrete ich ihre Manege und verharre in Staunen: Opulenter Orchestersound mit Streichern und Piano ("Welcome"), schwungvoller Boogie ("Candyman") und klassischer Blues ("I Got Trouble") folgen überleitungslos aufeinander, einzig verbunden von einer beeindruckenden Interpretin, die - endlich, möchte man rufen - mit Soul und Tiefgang zu voller Größe aufläuft.

Linda Perry mauert keinen Unterbau, sie gestaltet Kulissen. Die Zirkusarena hatten wir bereits. "I Got Trouble" versprüht den knisternden Zauber sehr alter Schellackplatten, das üppig aufspielende Orchester in "Mercy On Me" oder "The Right Man" wird einem nahezu bildlich vor Augen geführt.

Im krassen Kontrast dazu stehen mit "Hurt" und "Save Me From Myself" eine sehr schlichte, wundervoll berührende Pianoballade sowie eine leise Nummer zu akustischer Gitarre, die gerade aufgrund ihrer Reduziertheit extrem charmant an den Mann gebracht wird.

"Nasty Naughty Boy" entführt dann endgültig in den plüschigen Nachtclub. Applaus gibt es am Anfang und am Ende - natürlich nicht während des Songs: Denn dann hängt die versammelte Zuhörerschaft gebannt an den Lippen der Sängerin, die - wie einst Marilyn Monroe bei ihrem Geburtstagsständchen - die perfekte Mixtur aus Naivität und Verruchtheit zur Schau trägt. Spot an, auf diese Frau! Wow!
