Opis:
Reedycja znanej z 8-bitowców gry o dwóch toczących ze sobą walkę agentach. Kapelusze, szpiczaste nosy i wysokie kołnierze powracają, by zmierzyć się w odwiecznej walce różnokolorowych szpiegów.

Description:
February 25, 2005 - It's been a little known fact that there was a Spy vs. Spy game in the works for the past couple years. But aside from a handful of screens that emerged over a year and a half ago there has been complete silence on the project. Then, all of a sudden, some folks stop by our office to show off the latest build for the game which is apparently coming out next month for just $19.99. Wonders never cease and the spies with the MAD Magazine roots will finally get their turns on both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

The classic Spy vs. Spy game that originally appeared on the Commodore-64, Apple II, and Atari 4/800 featured the two spies trying to kill each other in a split-screen battle. Moving from room to room it was possible to fight hand-to-hand, but the real appeal was in setting traps to kill the other spy. A nice shock from an electric doorknob, for example.

So, over 20 years later, what do we have now? A platforming game with plenty of jumping on the single-player side and some multiplayer modes where four people can duke it out with an assortment of weapons and traps. We only got to see the single-player for a minute or so in which the black spy was definitely running around a simple environment and shot a slingshot and then our demonstrator quickly changed the topic, and the game, to multiplayer. The main mode that we explored was one in which two of us fought to get all of the hidden items in a level. To make the game more interesting we added two bots to fill out the four player maximum and let the whole thing run. Each spy has his or her own home base in the level where new weapons and traps can be bought. These headquarters also provide a health power-up and are equipped with lasers to obliterate anyone else who tries to get in.

All of the safe spots fed into a big lobby that was the focal point of the map. From here there were hallways and doors and stairs that led to other parts of the map. By exploring the world we found four different areas with safes in them. All of these required some jumping skills to get to and each had three safes. If the item in the area hadn't been claimed yet it could be found in one of the three safes. By collecting all four items from all four areas a spy could rule the world.

If a spy gets killed while holding an item, one of them will drop on the ground and can be picked up. If it isn't snatched soon enough, then it gets spawned back in one of the safes again. To make sure that this doesn't go on forever a time limit can be imposed. Even if the single-player and multiplayer games appear to be pretty simple it's really the traps and the mischievousness that will make the game stand out from others. The main weapons are fairly limited, yet powerful, with a club, a machine gun, and a bazooka forming the main firepower (and whacking power) in the game. It's the rest of the trip mines, electric doorknobs, buckets of acid for doorways, and loads of other items that help things out.

In addition to all of the items that the spies can carry there are also some environmental traps to be wary of as well. By flipping a switch, one spy can set up a trap where if another spy (or the same spy if he's forgetful) can trigger a deadly scenario. A robot butler will come out of a wall to shove a spy down a garbage chute in one area, a volley of arrows will shoot out somewhere else, and a piano will fall from the ceiling in yet another. And, if all of this fails, there's still the option to just grab a bazooka and blow someone else up. Which is most of what we did for the duration of the demonstration. The traps and doodads worked well enough, but when someone is booking for their home base with some items on them it's a matter of taking them out as fast as possible.

After seeing most of what the game has to offer we'd have to pin our hopes as being cautiously optimistic about this one. The $19.99 price tag is alluring as is the ability to play online and Xbox users will get to chat as well, but the test will be just how deep the traps and counter-traps will all go. In a few weeks we'll have the full review to let you know how it all turned out.
