Description:
Entwine is one of those bands that came into being halfway the nineties in Finland as death metal collective, but evolved through the years towards a catchy epigone of gothic rock. When I read that they had moved towards a more mainstream direction again, I feared the worst, but it turned out extremely fine. This band writes superb songs and thats exactly what we need in this world with bands showcasing a groovy sound, but having lack of proper compositions.

Every band has its own approach, for Entwine it stands for ten new and captivating compositions. Painstained, the sixth full length studio album, kicks off with a fast and speedy track. Soul Sacrifice has some oriental tinged guitar lines and wealthy keyboard arrangements, but it remains heavy rocking stuff. The new single Strife on the other hand, has nothing but its catchiness (except a great guitar solo). Guitar skills and soloing are more than average on this album, thats obvious. With Dying Moan they truly surprise me. Initially I get a kind of Led Zeppelin feel (created by No Quarter keyboards) but vocalist Mika Tauriainen comes extremely close to Vinny Cavanagh and this stunner appears to be a song that would have belonged to the new Anathema album (if this ever comes out). Independently from this comparison, Entwine just kicks ass here!

Indeed, we have a couple of catchy songs on this album. For instance Beautifully Confined (I have been a Live fan in the very beginning), Greed Of Mankind (distorted vocals but fetching), the nearly punky rock attitude of Dead By Silence and the Radiohead allied Caught By Desire. Yet I am not done with it. As I said, I feared for a shallow approach, but on the contrary. The heydays of grunge reveal during the sensitive Lost In My Denial, the dark Hollow gives me shivers and the occluding track Say Goodbye moves me with its melodramatic tinge. It may not sound very true, but Entwine writes your diary notes from a distance (in Finland).
