Description:
In fine Native Tongues tradition, southerners Little Brother commendably combine jazz-n-groove beats with introspective, yet grounded, lyricism on their debut disc The Listening. While the press has paralleled this trio to every one from De La Soul to A.T.C.Q., the most apparent comparison has been widely overlooked: Slum Village, a hip-hop trio which also features two M.C.'s and a producer/ DJ. Comprised of lyricists Phonte, Big Pooh and producer 9th Wonder, Little Brother has been fortunate enough to have gained the endorsement of alterna-hip-hop big poppa ?uestlove and his Okay Player hub. But high profile props aside, The Listening stands on its own two feet. Clever old school hip-hop word play on "So Beautiful" revisits and resuscitates America's initial love affair with the rap game in the '80s. Yet at a time when the genre is becoming increasingly commercialized, the wistful title track addresses the rapidly declining attention to lyrical content and real skills. In fact they jokingly predict their displacement in the American hip-hop spectrum on the hook: "They ain't listenin', they thinkin' 'bout them Timberlands/ They say the shit we talk about ain't interestin'/ We got a better chance of blowing up in Switzerland." While most M.C.'s from the south spit murder-laden materialistic rhymes with a drawl through shiny, diamond-encrusted fronts; Little Brother touch on a wide array of topics with an impressively plausible Brooklyn aesthetic. Whether dealing with persistent groupies, brooding over loved ones on lock down or evading wack M.C.'s hounding them for hook ups, Little Brother chooses to scrutinize rather than scowl. It's so unlikely for a group of cats hailing from Durham, North Carolina to make such an impression on the East Coast and Midwest underground hip-hop scenes. Turns out, ?uestlove's praises weren't bluff. If Little Brother is any indication of its integrity, ABB is a label to be on the lookout for. If you enjoyed Mos Def and Talib Kweli's ...Black Star or Slum Village's Fantastic Vol. 2, Little Brother's The Listening is a must have. Don't sleep.
