Historia Helloweenu rozpoczyna się w 1979 roku, kiedy to Kai Hansen i Piet Sielck grają w zespole "Gentry", w kolejnych latach do zespołu dołączają: Ingo Schwichtenberg (perkusja) oraz Markus Grosskopf (bass), po czym zmieniają oni nazwę zespołu na "IronFist" Kolejną personalną zmianą było odejście po kilku latach wspólnego grania Pieta Sielcka. Zastąpił go Michael Weikath, który opuścił swój wcześniejszy zespół "Powerfool". I właśnie w tym momencie band zmienił nazwę na "HELLOWEEN"... W 1984 roku Helloween nagrywa dwie piosenki na kompilację "Death Metal". Są to: "Oernst To Life" autorstwa Weikatha oraz "Metal Invaders". Kolejnym krokiem do kariery jest rok 1985, kiedy to zespół nagrywa swój pierwszy album zatytułowany "Helloween" (zwany również The Mini LP ze względu na to, że zawiera tylko 5 piosenek). Jeszcze w tym samym roku zespół wydaje swój długogrający album "Walls Of Jericho" Po sukcesie, jaki odniósł pierwszy album, w zespole zachodzą poważne zmiany. Kai Hansen, który udziela się wokalnie na pierwszej płycie stwierdza, że ciężko mu pogodzić granie na gitarze oraz śpiewanie. W wyniku poszukiwań wokalisty do zespołu dołącza Michael Kiske (były wokalista "ILL Prophecy". Z nowym wokalistą band pragnie nagrać dwupłytowy album. Niestety wytwórnia Noise nie godzi się na to, dlatego w 1987 roku powstaje pierwsza część genialnego dzieła "Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1" Płyta przynosi zespołowi niesamowity i sukces. Muzycy między innymi zostają zaproszeni na duży tour po Stanach Zjednoczonych organizowany przez MTV

Helloween is a German speed metal/heavy metal/power metal band founded in the early '80s by members of the two bands Ironfist and Powerfool. Helloween are known as the inventors of power metal style in heavy metal genre.

The original line-up featured Kai Hansen (Vocals/Guitars), Michael Weikath (Guitars), Markus Grosskopf (Bass) and Ingo Schwichtenberg (Drums). In 1984 the band had signed a deal with Noise Records (see 1984 in music) and recorded two songs for a Noise compilation record called Death Metal. The two tracks were "Oernst Of Life" by Weikath, and Hansen's "Metal Invaders" which later on ended up in a faster version on the bands first full-length album.

1985 came around and Helloween then recorded their first record, a self-titled mini-LP containing 5 tracks. The mini-LP was successful, and during that same year they recorded and released their first full-length album titled Walls of Jericho which became a critical smash, with its innovative mixture of speed and melodies redefining heavy metal. However, during the following tour, it became obvious that Kai had difficulties singing and playing the guitar at the same time. Kai's last performance as the band's lead-singer came in 1986 in form of a single EP titled Judas, which contained the song "Judas" along with some live tracks. After that Helloween began the search for a new vocalist...
