Yash Daryanani

Yash Daryanani (born 1981 Chennai (then Madras)) is a Surinamese swimmer and coach.[1]

Life

The son of Haresh and Pooja Daryanani, Yash went to Suriname in 1982. His father, a trader in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, and his mother, a homemaker, were quick to spot Daryanani’s swimming talent and started him off in competitive swimming in the late 1980s. Daryanani’s younger sister Tapasia was born in Paramaribo in 1985; she was encouraged by her brother also and took up competitive swimming together making a brother – sister combo. Daryanani and his sister had won more than 100 medals and certificates at the national level besides representing Suriname at international competitions. Daryanani also excelled in long distance swimming and at the age of 14 was the first boy in his age group to swim the 1 km backstroke in a time of 14.45.01, and the 1.5 km Backstroke in a time of 22.22.17

Daryanani trained with the 1988 Olympics 100m butterfly gold medallist Anthony Nesty’s coach Kenneth MacDonald, and made waves in international meets as a proficient swimmer representing Suriname.

Daryanani then decided to go into coaching and became a qualified trainer in 2003. Daryanani coached swimmers at De Dolfijn one of the leading teams in Paramaribo and accompanied them to competitions in French Guyana and Curaçao where his swimmers produced admirable results.[2] It was obvious by now that Daryanani was equally proficient as a coach, and recognition came his way when he was appointed as one of the national coaches of Suriname in 2009. Daryanani accompanied the national team to competitions in Aruba, Barbados, Jamaica and Puerto Rico and was proud of the fact that many of the swimmers in the squad were those he had trained at the De Dolfijn club where he continues as coach.
