William Preston Young (4 August 1892 – 5 June 1965) was an English professional football goalkeeper who played in the Football League for Brentford. He was the first player since Brentford's election to the Football League to make 100 appearances for the club.[1]
Career
Early years
A goalkeeper, Young began his career with spells at Whitburn and South Shields.[2]
Brentford
Young was in the team for Brentford's first ever game in the Football League on 28 August 1920, which ended in a 3–0 defeat to fellow Division Three side Exeter City.[3] Young battled for the number one jersey with cricketer Jack Durston, but eventually made the position his own, making 94 consecutive appearances between September 1922 and October 1924.[1] He left the club at the end of the 1924–25 season, having made 180 appearances.[4] Young was the club's record appearance-maker until his total was overtaken by Jack Lane.[1]
