Whitegate (Irish: an Geata Bán)[1] is a small village on the eastern shore of Cork Harbour in County Cork, Ireland. It is within the townland of Ballincarroonig or Ballincarroony.

Once a fishing port and known for lace-making, in the 20th-century Whitegate became the location for Ireland's only oil refinery, which was built on Corkbeg Island on one side of the bay. Since 2016, this refinery has been owned by Irving Oil.[2] Aghada Power Generating plant lies on the other side of the bay.

The writer William Wall (b.1955) grew up here, though his home, then vacant, was destroyed in a fire in 2008 in a suspected arson attack.[3][4] Irish writers Maeve Binchy and John Montague also lived nearby at Roche's Point for a time.

There is a 14th-century church in the grounds of Corkbeg churchyard, now a Church of Ireland parish.

Trabolgan Holiday Village is located nearby.

FitzGeralds

The Anglo-Norman FitzGerald family, (a sub-branch of the Desmond Geraldines that owned Corkbeg and Lisquinlan from at least the lifetime of the 17th century landowner Sir Garrett Fitzgerald of Lisquinlan and Corkbeg), married into and transferred ownership to Col Robert Uniacke. Robert Uniacke married Helena FitzGerald and assumed the name and arms of the FitzGeralds by the will of Garrett FitzGerald's son, his maternal uncle, Sir Robert FitzGerald. Col Robert Uniacke Fitzgerald then willed his Corkbeg and Lisquinlan estates to his nephew, another Col Robert Uniacke Fitzgerald, who built a Great House replacing the older house by the ruins of the castle keephouse built by the Condon family. The Corkbeg and Lisquinlan estates were willed finally to Sir Robert Uniacke-Penrose-FitzGerald 1st Bt of Corkbeg and Lisquinlan MP Cambridge who died 1919 without issue.
