Veritas College is a residential college of Shantou University. It was established in July 2008, the first residential college on mainland China.[1][2] Veritas College purpose was to organized various academic and community activities with the expectation of enriching the educational experience and extra-curricular life of the residential students.[3] This change from a traditional dormitory was intended to encourage residential students from different majors to socially network, share knowledge and ideas, develop interpersonal relationships, and strengthen their confidence, independence and sense of social responsibility.[4]


Motto, Flag and badge

The motto of Veritas College is 诚,敬,谦,和. In English, this fairly translates as "Sincerity, Respect, Modesty, Harmony." [2]

Located in Jinping District, Shantou, Guangdong Province. Near the East gate of Shantou University.

Courses, camps and activities

Veritas College provides not only a dormitory to live, but also a place to learning and sharing. In Veritas College, students live in a dormitory come from different college and major on campus. Veritas College has its own student union and clubs, as a platform, students can make friends, share and learn from each other. What's more, Veritas College also provide students some courses and camps. This picture explains what kinds of courses, camps and Activities Veritas College provide.

Student Union and Other Organizations

Student Union

Founded in 2008, student union is a union of students. Student Union host a lot of activities to serve students. The most tradition and the best activities are the welcoming party and the farewell party. There are 8 departments, which help the Student Union work efficiently. The 8 departments cover every aspects of Veritas College, for example, the sports department, which organize the sports activities. The president of Student Union are selected by every students of Veritas College.[2]

Volunteer teem:Ivy league

Founded in 2009. Ivy league is a volunteer organization. It has a regular agent, with a president and two vice presidents. Three presidents help to run the whole organization, including 7 departments and a volunteer group. The traditional and the best activities are "helping the High-school students project", "helping children Project", "Summer vacation voluntary camp" and the "TEDx Talk in STU".[2]

The Youth League Branch

The Youth League Branch in Veritas College refers to China Communist Youth League. The Youth League usually offers the feature team day, which aims to educate the youth and spread the communist belief.[2]

The Monitor agent

Founded in 2008,the Monitor agent is a special agent of Veritas College. The monitor, usually are juniors of Veritas College. They serve as an example in study, moral and other aspects. They are selected to guide the freshman to help them adapt to the college life and help them as bothers or sisters in every aspects of college lives. The agent was founded to train and manage the monitors themselves.[2]

The Party Branch

The Party Branch of Veritas College refers to the Chinese Communist Party. Usually its activities are facing to its own members.

The Veritas College Magazine Agent

Founded in 2008, a magazine for every students lives in Veritas College. Usually the magazine post the articles about Veritas College lives. It came out at the beginning of the semesters. The Agent is a group of journalists and editors.[2]

Some Main Clubs and Societies


The Polar star Outdoor Expedition Club

Founded in 2013,the Polar star Outdoor Expedition Club is a club for students who loves the outdoor expeditions, such as climbing mountains, camping and so on. Every two year, the Polar star Outdoor Expedition Club would hold a Chief ATP Camp to train teamwork, survival skills and creative works ability.

The Lingxi psychology club

Founded in 2010, aim at giving professional psychology information and cultivate students attentions to psychology health, the Lingxi psychology club is a group instructed by teacher DongPing Jiang, a master of psychology study.

The Debate Team

Founded in 2008, Veritas College's Debate Team participates in regional and national tournaments. The Debate Team have more than 10 members. The leader of the Debate Team is a senior.

The Tradition Study Club

Founded in 2009.The Tradition Study Club was founded to create a platform for students to participate in traditional culture study. In the Club, students study Confucianism,Tao, Laozi, traditional Chinese poems, and so on.

The Deyi Gu Qin Club

Founded in 2010,The Deyi Gu Qin Club is a club of studying a traditional Chinese instrument—Gu Qin. Also, the Club holds the "Gu Qin Culture study Camp" every year.

History

The concept of residential colleges originated in Cambridge University, UK, but Hong Kong University (HKU) pioneered the first example in China. After Professor Li Dan of Shantou University visited HKU, Li Dan brought this concept to Shantou University, which then established the first residential college in mainland China.[1] Other universities in mainland China have been motivated by Veritas College's example, and are founding their own residential colleges.[4]

After only one year, the student response to Veritas College at Shantou University was overwhelming positive.[5] Because of ongoing student and faculty feedback, Shantou University has committed to establishing more residential colleges on the campus.[4]
