Togher (Irish: An Tóchar, meaning "causeway or level place") is a suburb on the southside of Cork city, Ireland.

Geography

The parish is bounded to the north by The Lough, to the south by Ballincrannig and Farmers Cross, to the East by Ballyphehane and to the West by Waterfall and Wilton. Flowing right through the heart of the Parish is the Liberty Stream, from Corcoran’s Bridge to Togher Cross where it disappears underground for a short while before re-emerging at Greenwood and lowing past Coffey’s Field before joining the larger Tramore River on its way to Douglas. In addition it has the Glasheen River acting as its western flank and the Glenmore River acting partially as its Eastern flank with the Pouladuff road taking up the slack as far as the junction of Pearse Road.

History

Historically it was an agricultural area with large estates owned by Ascendency families such as the Sarsfields. Togher originally lay in the parish of St. Finbarr’s South until 1890, when it formed part of the newly created parish of St. Finbarr’s West, better known as The Lough Parish. People had to travel considerable distances to attend religious services; Mass, Baptisms, Funerals etc. In 1963, Dean Murphy, P.P. of the Lough Parish, observing the huge development in the area and anticipating even greater changes, began looking for a suitable site for a new church in the Togher area. In the past quarter century, Togher has undergone a transformation not only physically but also in terms of its social and economic structure.
