Thirumalai is a 2003 Tamil action film directed by Ramana . This film has Vijay and Jyothika in the lead roles, while Lawrence Raghavendra and Kiran Rathod make special appearances in the film. Produced by Kavithalayaa Productions banner.[1] In which Vijay plays a bike mechanic of the Pudupet area in Chennai. This film was a turning point in actor Vjay's career as he introduced himself as an action hero with a new look. The new formula of action along with Punch dialogues suited well for Vijay. And worked out well on screen.[2] The movie was dubbed in Hindi as Dum 2.[3] The highly commercial success of the film lead to be remade in Telugu as Gowri in the year 2004. This movie also remade in Bangladesh as "Kotha Dao Sathi Hobe" starring Shakib Khan, Apu Bishwash, Sadek Bacchu, directed by Sohanur Rahman Sohan in the year 2009 and commercially success Bumper Hit

Plot

Thirumalai (Vijay) is a mechanic who lives in Pudupet and has three close friends for whom he would do anything. Selvam (Raghuvaran) is an artist who comes to stay near Tirumalai’s mechanic shop with his wife Nagalakshmi (Kausalya). Thirumalai happens to meet Swetha (Jyothika) on New Year’s Day. As she appears in front of him all of a sudden, she happens to greet saying ‘Everyone will do fine’. From that very day, things start to shine up in Thirumalai’s life. He falls in love with Swetha as he thinks that good things started to happen in his life only after she greeted him. Swetha first ignores him, but soon she understands his nature and reciprocates. Meanwhile, Swetha’s father (Avinash), a business tycoon who owns six satellite channels, hates the idea of a mechanic being his son-in-law and seeks the help of a local thug Arasu (Manoj K. Jayan) whose only job is to kill people for huge money. Arasu plots an attempt to kill Thirumalai. Does Thirumalai succeed in winning his girl or is he caught up in the plot against him?

Directing the film is debutant Ramana who had apprenticed with director R. K. Selvamani.

Namrata Shirodkar was chosen to play the female lead. But Director not satisfied with her screen presence and she was replaced by Jyothika

A set resembling a market place with a mechanic shop in it was erected at Mohan Studios at a cost of about Rs. 50 lakh. Designed by art director Kathir, shooting took place there for 30 days.[4]

Reception

The film opened to positive reviews. Thirumalai has been touted as Vijay’s comeback vehicle. Movie was blockbuster and this movie is the highest grosser among the 2003 Diwali releases in collections, which released in same day.[5] Now running gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and stated "There's nothing fresh here that we haven't seen in an earlier Vijay film".[6] Mouthshut.com described as "Same masala with different perspective".[7]
