The Prep Pigskin Report is an American high school football television show created by Paul Rudy and McKinnon Broadcasting, airing every Friday night at 10:30pm on the independent TV station KUSI-TV in San Diego.

Also known as the PPR, the program features highlights from every high school football game played on Friday night across San Diego County. The PPR also features segments showcasing student-athletes, coaches, and pre-game and postgame commentary.

The show premiered on September 4, 1998 as an extended sportscast. It has since been expanded to 90 minutes in length, and began its 18th season on August 26, 2016.

Accolades

The show has 14 local Emmy nominations (Pacific Southwest region) for Best Sports Program, winning the award seven times (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010 and 2011).

Show elements

Play of the Week: Each week, the best plays from the Prep Pigskin Report are reviewed and nominated for the Play of the Week. Viewers vote for their favorite play on PPR's social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The winner is announced at the end of Prep Pigskin every Friday night and they receive a "silk-cashmere-blend" Play of the Week T-shirt.

Coach of the Week: Each week the San Diego Chargers and the PPR team up to award a deserving head coach the prestigious Coach of the Week award. The recipient’s school is then awarded a $1,500 check before the next home game to contribute to its football program.

Game of the Week: During the PPR every week, the top match-up in the county is featured as the Game of the Week. The featured game includes extended highlights and a live post game interview with the player of the game.

North County Game of the Week: Escondido Cycle Center sponsors the North County Game of the Week, narrated by Rick Willis. The NCGOW features extended highlights and post game reaction from the top match-up in the North County (San Diego area).

East County Game of the Week: El Cajon Ford sponsors the East County Game of the Week, narrated by Stephanie Kelly. The ECGOW features extended highlights and post game reaction from the top match-up in the East County, San Diego area.

South Bay Game of the Week: National City Mile of Cars sponsors the South Bay Game of the Week, narrated by John "Soderbro" Soderman. The SBGOW features extended highlights and post game reaction from the top match-up in the South Bay, San Diego area.

City Game of the Week: Jersey Mike's Subs and EP Save a Life Foundation sponsors the City Game of the Week, narrated by Brandon Stone. The CGOW features extended highlights and post game reaction from the top match-up in the City of San Diego.

Alarm Clock Pep Rally: Allie Wagner starts her day in a high school gym at 6am, getting the host school pumped up for that night's game. Wagner then returns to the school for the night's game match-up, which features extended highlights and post game reaction.

Pigskin Idol: Every Friday night, a high school student gets their broadcast debut as the "Pigskin Idol". During each show, the high school student experiences what a PPR "Red Jacket" goes through every Friday, watching the game, writing their script and editing their game highlights. The selected student sits in the hot seat next to Paul Rudy, and you never know what's in store.

Shack's Pig Pen: Former Morse High School (San Diego, California) coach John Shacklett highlights the best interior linemen in San Diego County, on both the offensive and defensive sides of the line. Coach Shack breaks down their play from head to toe, and when you get a "Snort" from Shack, you know your in the pen for life.

Marching Scoreboard: At the end of every show, if you miss a high school football score, you can catch it during the "Marching Scoreboard". This segment features the band and/or color guard of a local San Diego high school, in a ticker style scoreboard at the bottom of the screen.

Student Athlete Spotlight: Every week, the Prep Pigskin Report selects a deserving high school student-athlete and features them in the Student Athlete Spotlight, narrated by Brandon Stone. This outstanding student’s talents on and off the field are highlighted with an emphasis on their academic achievements.

Carroll's Corner: Each week former Oceanside High School Head Coach John Carroll breaks down the film of all of the best high school football players in San Diego County.

In Studio Guests: Serving as the last segment on each episode of the Prep Pigskin Report, one high school football player joins Paul Rudy at the desk to talk about their own performance in that night's game. This segment allows viewers to get to know the athletes under the helmets, as they share more about their personal life and future plans.

Sounds of the Game: Every week, the PPR puts a microphone on a prominent player for the entire game. The best of the night’s sights and sounds are blended together for an National Football League films-style feature.

PPR Raw: PPR Raw includes all of the highlights from each game featured on the Prep Pigskin Report. These extended highlights show the best of each game with no time restrictions. PPR Raw highlights are posted to the Prep Pigskin Report YouTube channel every Friday night.

PPR Hogcasts: Every week, the PPR team "Red Jackets" find interesting stories at their respective game, both on and off the field. PPR Hogcasts are posted to the Prep Pigskin Report YouTube channel every Friday night.

Former Prep Pigskin Report show elements

Pigs and Things Trivia Each week our social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) asked you, the viewer, to answer a San Diego high school football trivia question. The winner received a gift card to Wings and Things.

Pig Poll: Each week our social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) asked you, the viewer, to ask our in-studio guest a question, which is featured during the "In-Studio Guest" segment. The person with the best question received a PPR t-shirt.

PPR Plus: Immediately following the over-the-air broadcast of the Prep Pigskin Report, PPR Plus began on KUSI.com. The 30 minute internet show was hosted by Allie Wagner and Jake Fadden. The program included more highlights, post-game reaction, big analysis and in-studio guests.

Chalk Talk: In each episode, a coach was chosen to draw up their favorite play on a chalk board. The coach and his team then ran the play in practice in front of the PPR cameras to see exactly what made it successful.

Pigskin Unplugged: Each week the PPR cameras would be inside the pre-game locker room to hear what the head coach had to say to fire up his team during his pre-game pep talk.

Pop Warner Team of the Week: A local youth football team was highlighted by Allie Wagner. This showcased their hard work and enthusiasm for football. Players were interviewed about their season and their love for football.

Silver Pigskin Gala

Every season the PPR holds the Silver Pigskin Gala to declare the winner of the prestigious Silver Pigskin Trophy. Well respected members of the San Diego Community are invited to attend the event each year, including San Diego Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco, as well as all former Silver Pigskin winners, including Reggie Bush (Helix High School), Abraham Muheize (El Cajon Valley High School), Jose Perez (Oceanside High School), Ryan Lindley (El Capitan High School), P.T. Gates (Marion Catholic), Dillon Baxter (Mission Bay Senior High School), Jake Fadden (Hilltop High School), Tofi Paopao (Oceanside High School) and Brandon Lewis (Helix).

The Gala was initially held inside the KUSI-TV studios in San Diego for the first six seasons of the program, before moving to the San Diego Hall of Champions at Balboa Park (San Diego) in 2005. In 2015, the Silver Pigskin Gala made the move to the flight deck of the USS Midway Museum in Downtown San Diego.

Iron Hog

Starting in 2010, the Player of the Year committee has awarded the "Iron Hog" trophy to the best offensive or defensive lineman in San Diego County. In 2013, Tiasamo Savusa of James Madison High School (California) was awarded the Iron Hog. In 2012, Scott Quessenberry of La Costa Canyon High School received the honor. He would go on to play college football at University of California, Los Angeles. In 2011, fellow La Costa Canyon High School Maverick Erik Magnusson won the award and went on to play at Michigan Wolverines football. The Iron Hog award went to Sam Meredith of Helix High School in 2010.

Silver Pigskin Award

Designed by Dutch Perry in 1998, the silver trophy with platinum in-lays took more than 100 man-hours to craft. The trophy weighs 35 pounds and is two feet tall.

Originally, the Silver Pigskin was awarded to the athlete involved in the "Best Play of the Season". However, as the Prep Pigskin Report evolved, so did the Silver Pigskin award. Currently, it is awarded annually to San Diego County’s most outstanding high school football player.

Silver Pigskin Award Nomination process

The Silver Pigskin Finalists are chosen by the Prep Pigskin Report "Player of the Year" Board of Trustees and by PPR viewers. Once the finalists are determined, ballots are mailed to every San Diego high school head football coach, local sports media outlet and all members of the PPR staff. Fans also have a role in determining the outcome through the "Fan Vote", by voting on all PPR social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The "Fan Vote" represents ten percent of the final vote.

Since 2010, the "Fan Vote" also selects the final nominee to stand on the Silver Pigskin podium. In 2010, Rommel Cooper of Mar Vista High School became the first nominee by fan vote, defeating four other players. In 2011, Landon Lozoya of Santana High School made the podium above eight other nominees, spurred by a school wide voting initiative that made local news coverage. In 2012, the "Fan Vote" final nominee went to Chris Martin of Otay Ranch High School. In 2015, Troy Warner of Mission Hills High School was voted to the podium by a land slide of social media votes.
